Hello Frens, I have some query regarding audition of AVR and Speakers. I have read in this forum regarding optimal settings of AVR with respective speakers.

Now when we go to a store for audition of speakers and test different brand of speaker with the same AVR do the person who is giving demo perform optimum settings each time for different set of speakers. And if not then one may judge one speaker who has got optimal settings on AVR better than the other even if its not the case.
I hope you people understand what I am trying to say.......

And one more I want to add some people here say that some brand of speakers go well with particular brand of AVR. But is there any thing AVR have to do with quality of sound??? As far as I have read its a modern version of amplifier with additional features added to it.

Please dont take this offensively this is just a query which I have in my mind and want to solve it......Thanx

normal thumb rule
1.stick to your faivarite files may be mucsic or movie....original diskcs are preferreble
some mute area in the movie scene or mucisc track is good for identifying noise
2.yes spkrs sound little diiferently with different avr.avr also plays a big big role.its not that quality spkrs will sound same goood with bad avrs.

3.about optimum setting...I am not very knowledagable.but same br disk with hdmi ports only in use and auddesy setting will help.dont worry showroom guys will help.
whatever u do..keep same crossover,sp distance,db setting etc..

4.best performance is at around 75 % of full vlume capacity at best files on moderatly priced items...less percentage for bad files...more for pricey items

our limitation is in a single showroom u cant get all avr and all posssible spkr connectivity options.plus room and cables also play role.room plays a role quite good.so listing in a friends items will help.showrooms sound different even same set up different showrrom.

anway denon polk good combo.
onkyo wharf(although not very populer combo) I lisntned is very very good for movies,
also
denon sonodyne, marantz sonodyne are good also......audition and decide...

best is catch a hfv expert member in your area treat him a good lunch and take him with your audition.hehe

Thanks a lot for your opinion......Actually I use my HTPC as a media player so dont have any BR all the movies are in my HDD. So can I take a blue ray rip in a USB drive????? So should I buy a blue ray of the movie I want to audition??????
And about the treat........I would love to give a lunch treat to an expert HFV member if he accompanies me.......
Actually I am not from Mumbai and will be visiting Mumbai on 15th Sep (saturday), so experts please help me choosing my HT setup and we can enjoy the lunch and drinks together......

this is exactly my situation have been to couple of av dealers they both showed different receivers with different set of speakers which were already paired how on earth should i know which receiver sounds best with particular set of speakers and vice versa. one thing I realized buying a home theater (if SQ is top on the list and budget is a bit tight 100k in my case) is much more puzzling and time consuming than buying a car or a tv.

Majority of retail stores like Croma, Reliance etc. don't employ knowledgable people and invest time to demo these (its a similar case abroad as well). You will get the right setup in single owner boutique audio stores. They may cost a bit more but you will get that personal treatment and experience that is missing in generic stores.

You are absolutely right almost all the way - the only other thing to think about even if all settings are optimal are the surroundings. Your home environment will never match what is available in these stores.

What I would recommend is u take the movies u actually watch (the rips on ur comp) for testing rather than bluray discs... The thing is the source should be the same in every audition to even things out... so if u could maybe borrow a media player from a frnd or something that would be good... When are u gonna audition HT setups coz I am gonna audition AVRs next week so maybe we could plan something together... Mind u I am as remotely far away from a audiophile as u can get but I wouldn't mind giving u some of my views & hearing some of urs :) ... BTW if we are able to workout going to auditions together then u dont have to worry about a media player as I will be bringing my Himedia 900b :) ...

you got your partner brother..:)
and yes keep the same file for testing...try rips with 6 channel dts tracks..around 6 Gb....there may be dts hd ma tracks files but so big..will take many timeto be downloaded.if you have already its good.no need to buy a new br disk.

Why not bro....I would love to audition with u. Are u situated in Mumbai, actually I will be there from 12 Noon to 7 PM on saturday 15th of this month. So give me ur no. so that we can make a plan together if possible....

try this moments.
dialogue scene without any bass for voice test..with bass dialouges will be difficult to test
complete silence moments for noise identification test at very high volume
sudden gunshots to make that thump at your chest

I mean these things I learnt from this forum...there must be some other tests also.

good hollywood movies will do..there are several movie.but very much depends on files also.

some particuler scenes.
1.rab ne bana de jori...when shakhrukh khan is going to office just after his marrige and tries to knock the door.there is a complete silence moment for around 1 minute
2.the expendables 1 when at the last action scene entering with the famous shot gun scene
3.titanic many scenes without any bass but clear dialouges.
