Esteemed FM's - I am contemplating a speaker upgrade and as part of this, I want to audition Avalon Acoustics brand of speakers. I have heard some of their range toppers in shows but have not heard their mid level offerings. Any personal audition experiences - I will be grateful to hear these.
Cheers,
Sid

I have heard the Eidolon Diamond a few times before. Best to say that the sound is completely neutral and that you need high end components with it as it is very revealing of any shortcomings.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Staxx, good to hear that. I believe my current electronics will fit your description. My only constraint will be the room size so I have to consider the ascendent and below perhaps.
Cheers,
Sid

Yes your upstream electronics are very good. Of course, I have not heard the synergy together with those particular components. I have heard it with rather powerful SS stuff.
But I must say, I am surprised with the shift from Harbeths, which are an entirely different kettle of fish....in terms of the family of sound.
Let me know if you plan to do something with the Harbeths....

Though I have no personal experience, my kraft 250 is reputed to be able to drive 1 ohm speakers with ease outputting 1kw per channel while doing so, so I think I am adequately covered in terms of power.

I am contemplating an upgrade only if the prospective speaker can better the SHl5. Really I do not have a strong preference of a particular type of sound. Neutral, Warm side of Neutral, cool side of neutral etc. are all fine provided it sounds pleasing to my ear, so any speaker is game, though I find myself leaning towards warmish signatures. Sure will let you know if and when I find a replacement for my Harbeth.
Cheers,
Sid

I believe our fellow forum member Dinyaar had a pair of Avalon Ascendants. He might be the best person to answer any queries. However I don't think he's active on the forum these days.

Absolutely ROC. His opinion will be very important, more so because he replaced them with the Focal Diablos. I will try to pm him.
Cheers,
Sid

Check with Shanti also. He has a lot of experience with Avalons.

BTW: Why dont you consider Shanti's current speakers which are on sale.

O Man! Shanti's current speakers are something else! You should actually consider flying to mumbai for an audition!

Avalon Acoustics sounds so similar to Evolution Acoustics!

But I am sure this similarity is only in their name, not how their product sounds :)

I believe they are Tidals - Not sure of the model - if Shanti/Bagwan reads this he can chime in.
Cheers,
Sid

Absolutely Malvai, something to consider - btw Mumbai is easy - I am planning a 24 hour trip to North America during 2013 spring to audition some of the speakers that I suspect will sound good in my setup.
Cheers,
Sid

Tidal's Amea Diacera. Recently I recall that he replaced the stock C-137/T6 woofers with the Black Ceramic Cone (BCC) woofers used in this speakers (the ones on the front baffle). Tweeters are 28 mm diamonds from Thiel & Partner (Accuton) (IIRC).

@bhagwan: please correct me if I am wrong.

Must hear them but @ your Den with your electronics to be absolutely certain.

Best Wishes for your speakers hunt

:)

And therein lies the problem when hunting for high-end speakers, almost no chance of a home audition - except maybe the Avalon and Mbl's perhaps, as the dealer is 10 min from my home. Hence my interest in starting the thread on Avalon's.
Cheers,
Sid

BTW thank you all for the responses. I am taking this speaker upgrade kind of slow - first I want to exhaust all options that I have here in Hyderabad - with home auditions and such - then consider pan India, then I will plan to go overseas. Honestly though, 1 trip to the US and about 3-4 days time I will be able to audition all the brands that are in my mind right now.
Cheers,
Sid

Yes Dinyaar kept his Avalon Ascendants for a short time to be replaced with JM Focal Lab Utopia series BS
