How will an AVR limited to 5.2 set up (Not having DTS X or Dolby Atmos feature but having DTS HD MA and Dolby TruHD) behave when I play a downloaded movie file that contains Dolby Atmos
sound track (provided the fact that my media streamer is capable to pass through the Dolby Atmos audio to the AVR).

I understand that the following is the order of Dolby audio upgrades:

Dolby Atmos > Dolby TrueHD > Dolby Digital

Will I be getting Dolby TrueHD audio or just Dolby digital audio from the avr?

Thanks a lot Manoj.
And will it be the same case with DTS files also? Suppose i have a movie file that has the latest version of DTS which is 'DTS X' sound track.

DTS X > DTS HD MA > DTS

Will the same AVR be able give DTS HD MA audio while playing the movie or will it be just basic DTS audio?

yep.

Atmos track is embedded in TrueHD. Likewise, DTSX is embedded in DTSHDMA. Legacy receivers will see it as that and output it.

You will be getting the full sound in Dolby True HD format.

Atmos is for 7.1 or more speaker set ups. How can 5.1 set up shall be able to render all the frequency sounds for surround sound in just 5.1? I mean to say surround speakers in 5.1 set up have certain limitations.

However, my AVR (Yamaha HTR 3066 of YHT 299) does display Dolby trueHD when played a downloaded Atmos file. Ditto for the DTS-HDMA.

You will be getting Dolby true HD for atmos track, similarly dts hdma for Dts X tracks in case if the AVR doesn't have the decoding feature. Remember if AVR has the atmos & dts X decoding facility, atmos decoding will be done only in case if u configured the speaker settings for 5.1.2 (I.e., either height or ceiling speakers are required) whereas in case of dts X it may even come in 5.1 configuration also, but the best effect will be if u are having some height/ceiling speakers.

Atmos is such a marketing gimmick. There is a video on audioholics that talk about the gimmicky nature of atmos and pointing speaker upwards to bounce sound from the ceiling and stuff. A good 5.1 system, configured correctly with room EQ properly setup will render a great movie experience. At most go for a 7.1 and you should be good. Spending money on Atmos is a waste in my opinion :)

Atmos can be played back on a 4.0 set-up with only 2 front speakers and 2 height speakers.

The nested structure of an Atmos soundtrack makes it possible. At the core of an Atmos track is the entire movie soundtrack as a 7.1 mix. At the core of that 7.1 track is the entire movie soundtrack as a 5.1 mix. At the core of that 5.1 track is the entire movie soundtrack as a 2.0 mix.

True, a 5.1 layout won't let you hear separation between sounds around you vs sounds above you, but none of the sounds will be missing. You'll still hear 100% of the soundtrack, just through fewer speakers.

I am using Dolby atmos with ceiling speakers. It is worth upgrading provided one has original dolby atmos content. My set up is denon 4200w,5.1.2 config.sound is really moving in all speakers & above head effects are excellent.
traditional 5.1 set up can not give this effect.
so njoy dolby atmos with conventional speakers , no need to go for atmos enabled module, just add ceiling speakers to 5.1. set up and dolby atmos enabled receiver.
forget reviews, witness practical .njoy life & dolby technology.

Thanks Sachin. Which speakers are you using as ceiling speakers?
