Hi,
I'm new to this forum. Looking to setup a decent 5.1 setup at home. This will be used only for watching dth channels by family and occasionally HD movies by myself. The present setup includes 40" panasonic plasma + 5.1 sony ht(running in 2.1 mode) + airtel hd stb. I intend to add my desktop pc with hdmi out to this setup for playing HD movies.

Budget is 35K for avr. Please suggest a decent one that will fit my budget and serve the purpose.

Will be using the current speakers with the avr. Later I also wish to incrementally upgrade the speakers to better ones.

You can look at denon AVR x520. MRP 39k, discount 10% expected.
Please check the specs of current speakers and see if they are compatible with the AVR

Could you share your sony HT model #, juz to make sure speaker compatibility.. PC with HDMI is a great source.. You may not be able to use the sub as most of them are passive sub with Sony HTIB.

if 4K is not what you are looking for in a 5.1 AVR, you can consider used AVR from forum members.. You can easily get one for 15K..

Whether it is a brand new 5.1 AVR or used AVR, both will do the same function as they don't have height channels (Atmos/ Dts X)..

Spend the remaining money to upgrade speakers..

I second that opinion from elangoas. I understand your intention is to connect multiple source to this AVR, however been said that what is the point if the speakers are not able to deliver the magic created by the AVR ;)

Hence, IMO if you are ok with getting a pre-owned AVR with features and saving some money to invest in some decent Speakers to start-off would be ideal. Slowly you can take the path of upgrade when time/money permits. Most of FM on this forum have gone through this & I bet there is sense of satisfaction too :)

Thanks elangoas, apbinu and guddu478. I have never purchased a used product till date. Hence skeptical of investing 30k plus that too for avr which is a unknown area for me. If the used device has a defect, I won't be able to identify until I use it for some time. With new one being in warranty, i could at least take it to the dealer/service center. Having said that I feel your suggestion makes sense. I have started saving for good bookshelf speakers. Will keep adding speakers step by step. But first need a decent avr to hook up the stb.
@elangoas the sony htb was purchased some 8 to 9 yrs ago. Can't find the model# on it, i believe its a 1000 watts system.
Amazon has pioneer vsx831 on sale for 35k but comes with seller warranty, not pioneer india warranty hence not too comfortable going in for it.

Fair enough..I understand..

It should be on the back side of the unit (or) bottom or the user manual.. If you are lucky, you can re-use 5 of the speakers with the new AVR..

Worst case nothing works, see if you can sell your old Sony HTIB and reuse the money for better speakers..

Try to find HT demo rooms in your city and try to scout for AVR that are 1/2 yrs older.. The reason i say this is because, you will get very good discounted price and 1 yr warranty from the date of billing..

Any entry level AVR of Onkyo/Pioneer/Denon/Marantz & Yamaha will set you back by 30K.

Most likely Grey goods.. You can skip it..
