Hi everyone,

I’m new to HiFiVision and excited to be part of this community! After browsing some of the threads here, I can see there’s a lot of great gear knowledge and real user experience shared by members.

I have a small living room (~10×12 ft) and want to build a decent hi-fi audio system primarily for music listening (rock, jazz, acoustic) and occasional movies. My budget is around ₹40,000–₹60,000. I’m not tied to any particular brand yet but would love recommendations for:
  1. Stereo Speakers that sound open and balanced
  2. A good amplifier/receiver that can drive those speakers well
  3. DAC or source suggestions (if needed) for streaming from phone/PC
  4. Optional cables or stands that make a noticeable difference
I’ve read that room size and placement make a big difference, so I’ll be happy to share room pics and my seating plan once you ask for it.

What would you recommend in this budget for a complete hi-fi setup?
Are there specific models that give great value for money in India?
Any setup tips or common mistakes to avoid for small rooms?

Thanks in advance — looking forward to your suggestions!

You can go with actives from elac, Q acoustics etc. For dac, you can try Fiio R2R. FOr streamer, Fiio streamer or Wiim would do. Don't cheap out on cables too. go with something from belden, bandridge or mogami.

As for as speakers and amps, I doubt you will get a good combo in this budget. Try Mission, Qacoustics, Fyne speakers with something like Rega io, Cambridge audio AXA amps, marantz, norge, denon etc. Class D amps like fosi are good. But Class AB sounds better in the same budget for your kind of music.

For small rooms, bookshelf works the best. pull into the room by atleast 2 feet from the wall. you will be good. try to stuff the room as much as possible with non reflective items.
All the best.

Speaker prices have gone up quite a bit. Try and see if you can find the Elac B5.2 (below 30k) or JBL Stage A120 (below 20k) or Q Acoustics 3020i (below 25k) or the Wharfedale 12.1 (30k).

Alternatively, you can choose active speakers like the Elac DBX41 or Q Acoustics M20HD which take the Amp & DAC out of the equation.
  1. A good amplifier/receiver that can drive those speakers well
For passive speakers, look at amps from SMSL (RAW-HA1 or AO300) and Aiyima (T10). They're decent good sounding neutral amplifiers that can drive most entry level (<60k) speakers well and they have built-in DACs and enough connectivity options such as HDMI, Bluetooth, Optical(Toslink) and USB-in to make the entire process easy to begin with.
  1. DAC or source suggestions (if needed) for streaming from phone/PC
the abovesaid amps have HDMI, USB and bluetooth built in to connect all of Phones/PCs/tablets/TVs etc.
  1. Optional cables or stands that make a noticeable difference
Stands are essential to get a decent soundstage and more importantly, speaker placement flexibility and isolation from surfaces - choose stands that place the speakers (mid-point between woofer and tweeter) at ear height. Take your pick:

It's a tight budget so i would recommend tempering expectations. Going active is the surest way of getting the best bang for the buck but reliability is a concern - if the amp module of an active speaker gets cooked, finding spares may not be as straightforward.
Are there specific models that give great value for money in India?
Not really or not anymore at least to my knowledge. You could get a banging stereo for less than 60K in 2020 but we're 5 years removed and inflation has seemingly hit hard.

Nikhil - your location says USA. If you are still there, best to buy the amp out there and the speakers in India. You would be able get the best VFM this way.
Sub 200 USD stereo receiver with HDMI should be good enough.
You can buy good bookshelves for 40K in India. You can even get DIY frugal horns done in that budget.

As many have mentioned, active is a good way to go particularly since that’s a pretty compact room. Picked up the M20 for my parents and it’s a superb package. Sweet sound and fills even their space which is probably 20x15 or a bit more. You can add a subwoofer to it a little later if you want some more thump.

An alternative route I’d suggest is to look into some of the new ChiFi Class D stuff. The likes of Fosi and Douk have some amazing options at previously unimaginable prices. Very well reviewed too. A combo of their amps (integrated or monoblock even) should leave plenty for a neat set of bookshelves. And given they are shipped directly here, we don’t pay the obnoxious premium we would for the western brands, thanks to inflation and the new exchange low.

Shiver me timbers, a close buddy's M20HD got cooked and the Q Acoustics service center returned it to him expressing their helplessness due to lack of spares support from the company. I'll ask my buddy to share the emails/messages from the service center and post it here if I can get him to. Simply pathetic!

Yikes! Well I can only pray that doesn’t happen I suppose. Particularly considering I have the 3050i towers in my living room 😢🤞🏼

Please do post the messages though. I’m sure a lot of us would be interested (terrified). Particularly relevant here considering Hifimart also stocks and sells them, as do a whole lot of retailers.

Don't worry about passive speakers - speakers and their drivers are hardy and won't spoil unless overdriven to extreme volumes and distortion. It's the amp module that gives up usually in Active.

meeting him tomorrow. will get the responses 👍

Hi Nikhil
Good.morming .
Since you mention that you are based in USA you can try Schiit Audio products .
They have pre amps Power amp and DAC s.
I am using their products extensively and find them.very good over the last 5 years .
So you could source the amps and other accesories from USA ...and speakers you can look at it in India .
For Indian made amplifiers you can also look at Pulz Audio based out of Mumbai .
This too i have and find them good and VFM .
Alternately there are other good manufacturers of amplifier like O and B etc .
For Cables you can Try Mr Murthy s cable ...they are very good as well.
He is well known in the forum.

I cannot suggest any current Indian Brand speakers since I'm not aware and am using 40 year old Vintage Indian speakers .

Our Fellow Forum members will definitely know better on speakers .
Any other questions please revert .
Good luck for your search on your search for the music system .
Thanks again
Manoj
