Best ever deal for loudspeaker kits.

some pics

I have been voicing the speakers for some time

Adding or removing stuffing is tricky- a good balance needs to be found
you loose something and gain something when you either add or remove

i wonder if everyone has noticed this too

Note of thanks-to all who contributed to this build

Lovely speaker
The timing is superb and so are the vocals -thats all i want - im over the moon
what i love most about the speaker is the way i can crank up the volume without it shreiking

I re-read the Great Small Speaker Shootout where 11 $1000 speakers were compared, and the X-LS Encore came out on top. I must say that I can now relate to, and agree with the assessments of this speaker by the listening panel:

Quote:
JP: Nice decay, big soundstage, good detail, Musical, my toe was tapping
MB: Highs lively & detailed, Good mids, image is good with pinpoint detail, more air around vocals, pace right on, more musical
GD: Very nice speaker, good image, depth, solid, very good low level details, very musical, easy to find placement of instruments , clean
AS: Good balance top to bottom, low end really solid, stage nice width & special cues, mids/vocals very nice
RG: Amazing low end, very deep and open, pleasant overall sound, good weight and size, no sub needed

Unquote

I especially agree with the parts about good decay, big soundstage, good imaging, lively and detailed highs, and amazing low end. To these I would like to add that the midrange is nothing less than superlative.

Moral of the story: those of you too tied up or too lazy to complete your builds, you are MISSING out on quite something:)

So when are we invited to your place for a good listening session???? :ohyeah:

@anm
cant do a 1 off build sir
not feasible
i did these because 4 pairs of cabs were built in one go

joshua

Its also that you were darn lucky to get it right the first time
otherwise DIY can get really frustrating too.Im sure half DIY projects never turn out as planned

anyway let me know when you sell the ferraris

i might intrest you with a fountek ribbon tweeter and a scan speak woofer build

So when are we invited to your place for a good listening session???? :ohyeah:

joshua still is voicing the speaker to its best
we will be sitting down with the cab designer this weekend to get it right

i sure you will be welcome post this weekend

Judging by his post, I thought he has achieved his requirement & thats why asked. Anyway, hoping to hear from the horses mouth & he can invite whenever he is ready :cool:
Probably will be a good idea if we have a std. kit speaker also available to do a A/B with his sonic cap upgraded version.

@denom: I am travelling to Hyd this weekend.

magma has lined up some serious manpower and audio machinery to do the voicing this weekend. I will go by the conclusion of the team ( on how much recron filling to stuff inside the cabinet) as the panel involves some of the ears that I trust the most.

Only prob is I don't have a digital scale that will measure the weight of the stuffing. Once we complete the voicing, please come over. In any case, your visit is long over due:) Let's target next weekend if it is convenient for you.

@magma: Sir, you were there for me at every step so very less chance of anything going wrong:) And perhaps beginners luck working for me:lol:

"fountek ribbon tweeter and a scan speak woofer" <-- is this happening any time soon? Once bitten, I am now twice eager. I was reading up - mouth watering - this from another thread.

I am keen to listen them too.

@ Magma ;

The Plan is for Sunday, I think - 1100.
We were to do it on Saturday but KJ is not free, so do come on Sunday morning.

You will need to get with you :-
a]
Speaker
b]
Stand
c]
Filling - for the speaker - recron / sheep wool / horse hair etc.
d]
Speaker Cables - banana's would be preferred

p.s. The speaker looks nice 'finished'
The White Stripes make the speaker look super - I still would have preferred a black carbon fibre stripe in the middle - flanked by 2 white stripes on the sides - just my suggestion;;;;

You will need to get with you :-

Plus digital scale to measure the filling.

And if you have the polyfill sheet, please take that too to figure out if it is better than plain old recron.

Also, what about bhagwan's earlier suggestion for "pillow" type of filling? This could be good for (for example) targetting behind tweeter?

Hey Joshua, considering that recron absorbs the standing waves generated from the rearward movement of the driver cone and considering that tweeters are sealed from the backside so that their back wave doesn't get into the cabinet, don't you think that putting recron behind tweeter is useless?

I honestly don't know the physics so will have to try by experimentation.

As far as I know polyfill=Recron="pillow" type of filling. Recron is just the brand name for Reliance's polyester filling.

And, the filling is not going to affect the tweeter in this case.

And to muddy the waters a bit - Recron [polyfill] is available in different densities the unit of which is Denier. There is one available which is extremely soft and floppy - like silk fibres - I forget which D [Denier]. There is one which is coarse. And there is one available which is silky but springy. This might work best.

@bhagwan - i was hoping to use your speaker cables - cant we use yours ?

i will be carrying two sets of speakers - one is mainstream product and not a DIY
i will be getting the stands and the filling
though i dunno how im gonna get everything in the car though

the stands i use are the 1 inch prime - they weigh close to 86 kgs
i will need some help unloading

@joshua
ok will get the polyfill sheet too
i am improvising on a net cage system for suspend the recron as suggested by KJ

@capt
KJ has suggested the suspension
apparently there are some things that work only by expereince
there is no logical explanation - or at least i dont have a logical explanation even though there might be

@keith
sir
filling behidg the tweeter does affect the voicing of the speaker - a couple speaker designers have experienced it
Now whether it actually affects the sound by playing a part in the frequencies/waves generated by the tweeter or the woofer - thats another story

Recron chosen in this case is the medium to lower density one(its how you describe "silky yet springy" ) since we have already used no rez , plus our cabs are a box in box design with contours inside to break the standing wave

The recron will more be playing a part in smoothening rather than wave breaking

sirs
thank you all for your valuable inputs
they are much appreciated

Sure,
My Silencable Symphony 'reverse' shot gun can be used - Speaker Cable i.e.
I will remove it from the TAD & we shall connect it to your speaker.

You could even get your 'lighter' stands - will make logistics 'easier' & to move them around will be / get easy.

Sunday @ 1100 @ my place. Do co-ordinate with KJ.
