I know, bose doesnt have a reputation but still.
I am just wondering, how come Bose sounds quite good compared to similar priced other speakers.

In one word

""Psychoacoustics""

To the untrained or novice who is entering into the world of Hifi. Bose may sound exceptionally good.
Do a A/B or critical listening and the flaws come out in the open

Just give a test tone of 1 kHz to this above A/B test, I think there will no sound from bose speaker. Just kidding, but yes there is serious lack of mid range frequencies in their systems. The reason is simple. Young ears fall for extended highs and lows. Whatever the quality may be.

Only seasoned audiophile knows the meaning of lustrous, liquid mid range. And they die for that.

Sound quite good to compared to similar priced????? Really????? And it is quite the opposite. Bose has a lot of reputation amongst the general public.

Bose may be the BEST in the mass market category which 'mango' people seek, more for the comfort of eyes than ears and 'mango' neighbours' envy. ;)

I have many friends who bought Bose systems just for the brand name, despite of me heavily coaxing them otherwise. They say it is BOSE so it is bound to sound good. I finally give up.

Man you will get some attention from neighbours and friends if you buy a Bose system.

Some "informed" friends come to my house see my system of Quad and B&W and say "you have spent so much, in that you could have bought a Bose system". Lol :D
(ei daam-e to Bose hoye jeto)

Thankfully I was able to convince one friend of mine who was a FAN of Bose to veer away from that name for proper music listening ;) Yeah I ve realized as soon as I stepped into Audiophile world as an amateur that if I keep my ears/and mind open I would spot the difference .. but you'd have to listen to some good gear(Unlike other mass produced commercialized gear out there) to realize what you are missing in Bose....
just my two cents :)

Bose is a Satellite speaker/Subwoofer combo built for HT purpose only.....If you compare with other satellite/subwoofer combo from any speaker brand, BOSE will def loose value...

Itz juz that ppl have not heard better systems than BOSE for the same price & hence the brand survives...

I envy their 'information'. Too bad, one just can not win!

This brand survives because of marketing. Some of the best brains of management from Harvard Univ work for Bose.

It is NOT the brains of Harvard that has made this aura worldwide, but the 'extreme' passion and the foresight of the 'Bose owner' to create a 'brand image' out of 'nothing much' over the last 3 decades which is undoubtedly paid / paying him back in the long run. Why I say 'paid' is because nowadays many 'mango' people are getting informed, informed due to the rapid influx of IT (information technology) which is educating a large section of the 'mango' crowd free-of-cost, hence bringing down Bose's business. However, mindset change is slow to happen amongst non-audiophiles as such buys are more due to peer pressure and ONLY perceived brand positioning.

Many of my friends (without listening to my stereo setup) says "you could have got good '5.1 Home theater' from Sony in this price instead of just these 2 speakers and amplifier" :D..

I am able to convince only two people after long listening sessions .

Many ppl make strange faces after seeing (not listening) Norge Amp.

No grudge or offense to anybody , neither I am a bose fan , but I have observed a very disturbing trend of criticizing Bose to be a self proclaimed audiophile . Its just has become a style, confined not only in this thread, but outside as well. Most of the time I do hear reasons which are insufficient to a new guy who is really searching for an accurate information.Again I dont have any foul intention to insult anybody, its just one of my casual observation which I want to share with OP. My humble advise would be to listen various brands before choosing anything and let your ear and purse to decide the rest, dont just stick to this forum to get more confused.

As far as my experience with Bose goes, I was planning to buy a 5.1 setup to be pared with Yamaha Receiver couple of years back. So before started researching on internet, one of colleagues influenced me to go to a Bose showroom at Calcutta who is a great admirer of Acoustimass 6 series. So the showroom guy has already made me impressed with boom boom fighting sequence of the scenes from die hard2, black hawk down, casino royale.I was almost ready to pay then the salesman politely asked us whether we are carrying any dvd of our choice. And man , what a mistake he has done. By tremendous fortune, my colleague just has bought the dvd of Meet Joe Black before entering into the showroom and we didnt have anything else besides that. We started playing the same and the smart sales man dug his own grave more deeper when he fast forward the scene where Brad Pitt is going to meet Anthony Hopkins for the first time. Its a full dialogue based scene of almost 15 minutes and man you should see the embarrassment on the face of the sales man itself. I am no where near an audiophile but still I just cant hear the dialogues cleanly even when the salesman was trying desperately to manually increase the mids in of the Yamaha receiver ( RX-V465). But that didnt improve the situation at all . So we went back promising the fully disappointed salesman with a false promise of retuning again.

Then I get in touch of this forum, and by the advise of Venkat sir ( whom I hardly seen nowadays to post something ) , I went to Delhi to one of my friends house just to listen Q Acoustics he bough from London. And man what a difference. SO ultimately settled for Q Acoustics and still very proud of my possession. Its a real jaw dropping experience to listen QA .
