Hello Everyone,

I am going to Singapore in January and planning to purchase Panny plasma from there. I want your views about the price difference and the product quality.
I also want to know will it be really difficult bringing 42'' plasma as in shipping.

I have searched for custom duty and it is around 36%. Initially upto Rs. 25000 no custom duty but above that I have to pay 36%.

Your views on this appreciated.

Regards,
Himanshu Rajan

How long will be your trip? This will be of a large importance.

If you are going for less than 3 days, then you do not get the full duty exemption. If it is more than 3 days, your get Rs. 35,000 personal baggage duty exemption (not 25k).

If you are going for just a week, then perhaps you can manage with a small bag for clothes/personal effects. This will allow you a lot of leeway to carry the heavy plasma. You must check with airline for the exact baggage rule.

After you buy from Singapore, you will be able to claim GST refund at the airport. Please refer: Tourist Refund Scheme. Please keep all bills/invoices in duplicates.

I would also like to suggest to be extra careful with packaging the plasma TV. Don't just rely on company packaging. You should add as much cushioning around TV panel (in and out of the box) as possible. You may use material like bubble wrap for cushioning.

I came to know from a Samsung technician that someone from Pune brought 55 inch LED TV from Singapore only to find, on arrival, that the panel was damaged. We can imagine how much would it cost to replace the panel. The total cost would definitely be more than the price of the model in India that too without any warranty.

I will be staying for more than three days. I am happy to know that the exempted duty is till Rs. 35000. I am travelling with my wife so I think baggage will not be a problem.

One more thing Is this rule of 35000 for single person and Can I club it with that of my wife means Rs. 70000 for couple and no custom duty.

Thanks

As far as I know, though the duty exemption is per person, it cannot be clubbed for a single item. For customs officers, an item belongs to a single person.

as far i think it cannot be clubbed you can get two 35000 items and claim individually not 70000 as a couple just my 2 cents

Ideally Plasmas need to be transported vertically in standing position only and should not be stacked flat on the floor. The screen is very prone to get cracks, so be extremely careful.

Having gone through this personally (not from Singapore), here are my tips:
(1)Practically all TVs are now available in India and prices are not bad. So if you really want to get one from abroad, choose one that is really worth all the pains. In my case, I went for the Pioneer Kuro plasma, something hardly available in India and whatever available were at too high prices. I would still say, if you can get one from some old stock in Singapore or slightly used one, go for it. Nothing beats it and is worth going through the import pains. If not, the best bet is to get a Panasonic plasma in India with warranties etc. Another I would consider is the Phillips 21:9 LCD, now an extinct species, but believe me, the best LCD I had seen. It should be available at throwaway prices if they still exist. Of late, I am seeing big screen Sharp LCDs, quite impressive. With such a wide variety of choices, decide what you want and then whether you need to import or buy locally.
(2)As far as I know, when a family travels together, only one duty exemption up to Rs35,000 is allowed. If there are 1 husband, 1 wife and 2 children, only one person gets the benefit when travelling together. Otherwise, all have to travel together but keeping a safe distance away from one another and behaving like strangers, praying at the same time that some smartass does not get ideas.
(3)If you are unfortunate enough to decide and buy a plasma from abroad, contrary to the advices of well-wishers like me and some others, it should be shipped only inside a wooden container box specially made to hold the TV. Here in the Middle East, freight agencies are specialised in that as several people send TVs home safely. They themselves make the wooden frame once the TV is handed over to them and transport it and never do it otherwise. I have heard that most of them reach the destinations safely.
(4)To complete the story from comedy to tragedy, I sent the Kuro plasma which reached safely at my home in Cochin. When I went home, I got a bit misadventurous and tried to unpack and install myself when it slipped from my hands and you can imagine the rest. I still keep the broken panel with me with all accessories like its media box, speakers and stand. Why? I was so crazy that I bought another one and am using it now!!! The broken one serves me to use its spares whenever needed! Do I regret? No. Some money went down the drain but it is Kuro plasma and I have yet to see another better it.

Good luck with your quest and all the best. Hope you don't end up like me!

Sorry, forgot to conclude the moral of my story:

Buy one, get one free - but you won't, for sure.

As they say, you can't win them all but keep trying.

cheers and bye.
