There is a software for setting up a static ip in portforward.com
Set it up and Then in your modem settings go to security/port forwarding.
Add your IP and the port no.

guys, i am able to open the modem configuration page now - with the help of the bsnl technician.
but i need to know how to do (any of) the above listed three options.
appreciate the help.
i downloaded the software and tried running it and got the message : "this ip address is currently static" and lists :
ip address : 192.168.1.100
gateway address : fe80
subnet mast : 255.255.255.0
primary dns : 192.168.1.1
secondary dns : 218.248.255.139
so does this mean that my ip is already static?
there are options like 'load','save','change settings' etc. not sure if i am to use them.
also what port number should i use (if the ip is already static and i can use it in the modem configuration)?
appreciate the clarification.
if its static then nothing to worry about.for what purpose you are forwarding the port, is it like streaming or gaming..?

well i download movies. but not able to seed.
In your torrent client look for the port no in the settings.change it to a no between 49900-65000.
Then add that port no in modem settings.

in the client the 'port used for incoming connections' is listed (editable) as 43956. this won't work?
which 'modem settings' are you referring to? in the modem configuration page?
under security/port forwarding?
if i try 'add new port forwarding rule', it wants the following data :
drop box for predefined with options : audio/video, games, messeging, servers, vpn, others.
instead of predefined there is also another option for user defined.
another drop box for wan interface.
then forward to internal host ip address - is this the ip address of my laptop?
then protocol/type, external packet - port start/port end, forward to internal host - port start/port end.
what do i fill in in all these?
Change the port no.to a value in the range I said before.
Go to the UseR defined settings
Enter your laptop IP address
In protocol/type first add tcp and in both external packet and internal host type the same port no.in start and end.
Do the same for udp protocol.
This should open your port.you check it in any website like canyouseeme.org.
If not u should add exception rule in your windows firewall and in antivirus

i have done the above :
Name Protocol External Port Internal IP Internal Port
pppoe_0_35
vpcnk51234 TCP 51234 192.168.1.100 51234
vpcnk51234 UDP 51234 192.168.1.100 51234
but is the ip address right above? it is what is listed by ipconfig IPv4 address.
in canyouseeme.org, it shows a different ip :
Your IP: 117.192.41.134
What Port?
Success: I can see your service on 117.192.41.134 on port (51234)
Your ISP is not blocking port 51234
appreciate the clarification.
thanks all, especially vindie and just4kix, i am able to seed now.
two more questions :
1. if firewalls are disabled, how do we ensure security?
2. tips to speed up seeding?
appreciate the insights.
Firewall should not be disabled. Only the torrent client should be allowed as an exception.
