R3 irrespective of the price is an excellent reference speaker as far as accurate sound is concerned. But we have more ls 50 fans than r series fans. On my first listen on the r3, I was immediately in love with the modern kef sound. Ls50 was the one that let me down after reading rave reviews. Also it looks beautiful in person with that optional grills. I mean it is understated, modern and but not blant. Ls 50 looks good from front and from sides it slightly resembles an old tv kept side ways.
Absolutely agree with you on the looks - they look really really good. I also concur on the LS50 comparison. I heard the LS50W at the What HiFi show in Hyderabad - I was quite disappointed.
Okay so here is the thing - I listen to music a LOT ( 4-6 hrs a day on average - longer if I had my way) and I listen to almost ALL genres I can get my hands on. Rock n Roll, Pop, Jazz, Western & Indian Classical, Ambient, Hip Hop, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Indian Fusion, Electronic, Alternative, Indie Rock, Folk, R&B ...the list goes on and on.
Since I listen to music all the time I prefer warmer/less fatiguing sound from my system, I am leaning towards the S400. That and also because they are available in India at the listed price (I had mentioned this on the " High Import Duty" thread).
BUT this wont do the trick for me, because some genres require accurate production of sound (think electronic, ambient, deep house...). Like you had stated - the R3s excel at this.
I understand that no single system will ever achieve all that I want. I do wonder though if a tube pre-amp in the chain with R3s will solve this on the cheap for me. Accuracy when I need it and warmth when I don't. (A Topic for a new thread maybe?)
