Buying Speakers from abroad : Good idea or Not

This limit is 25,000 if :

1. You have stayed abroad for 90 days or more
2. It was brought in as part of baggage with passenger
I have a spare copy of the disembarkation form to hand, and it does not mention 90 days, only "tourists of Indian origin"

I brought my M-Audio AV40s in Singapore back in February, along with a moderately expensive firewire audio interface. My wife and I approached the red channel, invoices in hand, and were firmly ushered to the green channel, and out the door.

Last week, on the other hand, I bought a heap of stuff like plug adapters and 4-ways* and other odds and ends. Nothing was of any particular value, but it really stood out on the x-ray, and I approached the green channel knowing that one bag was marked, and we would be stopped. The guy (probably thought I was a tourist, despite the Indian wife) looked pretty puzzled as to why I should be bringing this stuff, and was content to take my word for it that there was no high-value item.

*facilitates my large selection of British-type plugs, which are also used in Singapore.

Thank you all for such nice tips .... I was wondering what will be the cheapest way to get the speakers from US for those who don't travel to US much :P ... Is there any online shop in singapore to buy speakers and other Audio equipments .... From there I don't think the shipping charges would be huge ...

binay,
best thing go to singapore and shop your brand speakers and fly down, hope you need to pay some custom charges as per our HFV members said in this thread.

Get Speakers Or Floor Standers From Dubai if cheap
and ship it to India Via Singapore Courier(Courier name company) they ship it via Sea and heard they are cheap
Paying duty or no Duty Depends on Time (Luck favours you)

One Member told me this

Hmmmm ... now thats something new .... prithvi ... did u get something like that .... I am not able to gather the faith on such 3rd and 4th parties for something to the tune of 50K ..... May be because I have already been duped twice by sellers in ebay india :P

My Friend Got B&W Speakers for 1.6L and here it is 5L
They do shipping via sea and the arriving harbour is trivandrum from there to Bangalore or any part via Train. .

If you are not personally carrying it, its a big risk to ship speakers. The chances of damage are high and the support in India will be nil.

Thats the reason why people are talking of bookshelves which you can carry with you on the way back.

On the other hand, you buy products which are not too expensive compared to the original prices in their local country like the Wharfedales or the Polks.

No online shops that I know of in Singapore that will ship speakers to India but I have given you links to some of the stores in Singapore to whom you can write and check the local prices:

KEC Sound System - Lates Promotion Packages!

IMS Marketing Pte Ltd

In case if any one comes to Singapore let me know as I know a store in Sim Lim where the owner is very friendly and allows you to audtion with no obligation, typically most of the hi-fi owners in Singapore can be arrogant if you dont buy but this guy is an exception.

Yeap, I brought a pair of new axioms in my checkin suitcase and had no issues at all. Have been getting loads of electronics from US, Amps, Receiver, Radio etc...I always ensure I just carry only one with me and have never had any problems with Chennai customs for last 7 yrs.

Just out of Curiosity, which Axiom bookshelves did you buy?
