Dear Sir
I have compared , Via Coxial SPDIF, oppo 93, Pioneer DVD
Philips DVD, Marantz 5001 CD player
with a good DAC, the oppo out was best, followed by Marantz 5001
then a big gap then pioneer DVD and last Philips DVD
other things remaining same, the source does make a difference
the diff comes because of the way the data is transmitted at
player side and received in DAC, at the DAC end the shape of the pulse
gets affected, the rising edge becomes curved, sloped depending on
the coupling method, like capacitor coupling, transformer coupling etc
this has an effect on sound quality, there is definitely audible diff
depending on the player, bit correction, laser servo and lots on variables
can be there in addition to shape distortion in data pulses
to change the sound, I felt safer to use Foobar ASIO in PC to DAC
via USB
