From what I read so far it doesn't seem to be as straight forward as Synology. The new OS is not officially supported by Logitech.

Just another update. I had a spare 2Bay ReadyNAS Duo with a 2 TB( I had earlier planned to sell, but luckily had loaned it to a friend) but when my son who lives in the US was visiting here last month, got it configured for his SB Touch. I loaded LMS, put in some content, and lo and behold it is now up and running in the US. I think this is a great audio server, and with additional bays can be a great media server, (as well as a back up place.)

The NAS can also play music using your laptop, with the Sq Box software accessing the NAS wirelessly.

Well, before buying the NAS I already had 2x2TB Seagate drives which are being used in my PC, so wanted to go for the highest capacity available for the NAS. Then, finally decided on the Seagate 4TB Model No. ST4000DM000, its a 5900 RPM drive with 64MB Cache and supports drive spin down, which would be later implemented in the NAS.

You can for sure use the HDD you already own even if they are not listed on the compatibility list. Many of the members here as well as other users elsewhere are using non-compatible drives with the NAS. If you are planning of buying the NAS, then buy it without a new drive and test whether your old drives work with them for a week or so. If they are fine then you would have saved a lot of bucks!!

The WD RED is available in India but very scarce and is priced somewhere near 14500/- which is much higher than the Seagate. The WD has a 5400 RPM drive but comes with another year of warranty (3 years) as compared to Seagate. Haven't seen them online but available with local dealers.

I already bought ReadyNAS RN10400. I attempted to use by existing HDD and the first impression with performance is that its pathetic. In 7 hours its resyncing did less than 2% of my total HDD. I checked with Netgear support, and they obviously pointed out that they can not provide support since the HDD is not compatible with the device.

Already attempted OS Re-installation and Factory Default reset. Hope the problem is only due to HDD incomptability. Otherwise this will become my first experience to seek replacement.

Is WD RED(for Rs.14500) mentioned in your above post, 3TB or 4TB? If its 4TB kindly point me where I can buy that.

Hi Jeyaraj. The 3 TB Red costs me Rs, 11,000 plus change (incl. tax) each and I buy it from Aashirwad Computers on SP Road in Bangalore. Call Dinesh.
For your information, the first time I copied over a little over 2 TBs of data from an external HDD to the internal drives on the NAS it took about 13 hours. I did it overnight and it was done in the morning.

Generally all disks support a particular standard. In this case, its SATA. I don't think drive compatibility is an issue. I am not sure what resyncing is but If you are using trying to use RAID with existing data, parity computation takes time. Assuming your drives are 2TB, 2% is around 40 GB which is large amount of data that it has already processed.

Its 2% in 7 hours. In this rate it will take 350hours to complete 100%.

It is by default using x-raid where I got the experience mentioned above.

When I used flexi raid(RAID 0) it took lesser time to create the volumes. But transfer rate of data while copying from the connected USB3 port is again very poor. It was displaying that still 419 hours left to complete the copy. Total data size was mere 1.6TB.

In some of the HDD reviews in the web, it was mentioned the WD caviar green is not suitable to use with RAID.

XRAID is probably RAID 4 or RAID 5 so it will take time. A RAID 4/5 is generally started with fresh zeroed disks. In your case, its preserving data so its taking time. Is the data avilable while resync is going on? If so, let it run its course and don't worry about performance metrics. Once resync completes, you should get decent performance for reads although writes will be only slightly slower.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have installed Western Digital WD30EZRX, 2 x WD20EARS and a Seagate ST32000542AS. None of these is mentioned in the compatibility list but they all are working fine.

Data copy speed was also 60-70 MBps in all the HDDs.

So, I would think that the reason is something else (settings only, not hardware) and not necessarily compatibility.

Firstly, congratulations!!

Was the HDD previously formatted with data prior to using with the NAS? If yes, then you had to re-format the drive before using it on the NAS. Maybe, this would have caused the slow re-syncing process.

The WD RED price is for a 4TB drive. As the US dollar is under Rs. 62.00 and looks further weak, you could wait for the prices to come down a bit more and then buy.

The disks were previously used with DIY NAS Box installed with freeNAS. Can I connect the HDD to some other system and format it before adding it to readynas RN104. If so what kind of format is required to be done?

No, I don't think that will work. You will have to format it to BTRFS file format, used by ReadyNAS.
So it is better that you to go with the specified route. By the method given in the link it will properly format to BTRFS (B-tree file system) file format and can be used with the NAS.

I bought a new hard drive and it was un-formatted, so installed very quickly.

I assumed ReadyNAS will do the job for formatting it into BTRFS before creating new volumes. I could be wrong. Which link you have referred in your post?.
