I need to buy a TV for my living room 15ft by 12 ft. Amount of daylight is controlled by curtains. I am confused between SONY KDL 46W700A and SAMSUNG 51F5500. Kindly help me out ...

Iam in the same confusion dude, sammy 46F6100 or 51F5500.

what i think is, Buying plasma TV is a risk.

Actually buying any flat panel is a risk and here is why:

The current scenario is such that plasma will be mostly be out soon, especially in India. There are simply no buyers, however good the technology is and however better the PQ that a plasma delivers. So it is perceived that buying a plasma is a big risk because in case something goes wrong, there will be a large brick in the house. Apparently there is truth in this.

But consider this.

A flat panel TV consists of two main parts - the display panel itself and the electronic circuit boards. What has been seen often in the various flat panel TV faults, it is the PCB/Electronics that goes out. In this case, this is much more curable fault. After the eventual demise of the plasma, the companies will stop making it but they will continue to make the electronics spares in limited quantities to support the current user base. But there will be significant delays in getting electronic spares.

When it comes to panel failure then you are doomed. If you are in warranty, you may get a replacement. Plasma owners will mostly likely be offered an LED TV replacement. If the TV is outside warranty, then the user will have to pay for a new panel. Once again, plasma owners will not get any replacement. But LED TV owners will be not much better off. The cost of the panel is nearly 70% of the TV's cost. Replacing a panel will cost a lot and you will probably think "why not throw this junk out and get a newer/better model instead?". The days of "use and throw" have arrived most definitely in India.

So do not think that LED is no risk. It is a lesser risk for sure but I consider that when it comes to panel failure, the equation more or less is same.

Pls have a demo of samsung 51f5500 and go ahead with the purchase if it satisfies your expectation. If you have an option watch the same content side by side to the LED of same price range and decide.

Avoid Plasma, you will have to battle reflections and there is a chance of Burn-in from channel logos, news ticker bar, Sports scoresheet which we watch for hours. Burn-in is not covered under warranty by any plasma manufacturer.

Apart from these issues, the low plasma sales will mean crappy support in future, So buy an LED with extended warranty for complete peace of mind.

Hello.. I have had 3 plasma tvs and I have had no such problems as mentioned... Placing the tv in a proper location takes care of the reflection part.. I'm not a insure about the support... Because the panel has been designed to last.. Like n ambassador..

Their will always be plasma bashers who have never seen or watched one. They have just watched LCD and do not know the difference in picture quality. Ignorance is bliss for them.
i agree with gautham i also have 2 plasma sets at home and PQ wise very happy. My oldest plasma is 8 years old now and is giving excellent service, very happy with the same.

Also Etios please check out Samsung 64F8500 as you can place it anywhere you want, the PQ, and brightness is better than LCD and no issues with any reflections. It performs equally well in a light room without any issues.

In the end buy what suits your eye and fits your budget don't get carried away with the salesman gimmicks.

Burn-in is not covered under warranty by ANY plasma manufacturer and its a fact!! Even the mighty 64F8500 is not covered under warranty if it gets Burn-in, though i accept that it has great picture quality.

DTH logos, channel logos, News tickr, Sports channels scoresheet and Console gaming HUD often result in Burn-in, we had examples of burn-in on this very forum ranging from low range samsung plasmas to industry leaders like Panasonic ST50 and GT50.

Like i said, being knowledgeable and buying a product that gives excellent PQ or buying a LCD to watch the next best thing to avoid burn-in. I never had a burn in issue, just use the plasma on low settings for first 100 hours, also most of the modern plasma have software's built in like pixel shift, keep that on. Never faced any issues by following the above and have been happy with Plasma for nearly 9 years now.

So for any buyers that have doubts, see where you want to put up the set, whats your budget, and take good are in first 100 hours, post which you would not face any issues.

Or go for LCD and be happy with what you get and never view a plasma as otherwise you may regret your purchase decision. This has happened to tons of my friends who were at top of this world with their LCD/LED tv's and once they saw my tv things changed, most of them have switched to Plasma now.

I know the Plasma vs LCD discussion is a never ending one. So ignorance is bliss for LCD viewers that's the term i use now. Buy what looks best to your eye and suits your budget also look at the lighting conditions in your room. If its too bright go for LCD. if you can control the lighting or have a dark room go for Plasma.

Rest there are plenty of users in the forum here to guide post your purchase how to go about things whichever TV you buy.

I guess you are confusing Image Retention with Burn-in. IR is present in almost all models, but that goes away soon after you change the channel or switch off the TV. I haven't seen any cases of burn in on this forum in the last two years.

Deny, Deny, Deny is the mantra of the Plasma fanatics, i very well know the difference between IR and permanent Burn-in.

You have missed a lot of Burn-in cases on this very forum or maybe conveniently ignored in the last one year itself, no need of going back by two years. Here are some of the links on this forums, there are more cases but i don't have time to find all:
