Hi,

I have a assignment of converting 150-200 VHS cassettes (all personal videos, not movies) to DVD.

This is for a charity organization.

Googled and seen some adaptors like EasyCap

Can you guys suggest me something good and professional, cost effective and fast with good quality.

I am ready to invest some reasonable money for this.

I have a VCP which is very old and the head needs to be cleaned for better quality. But I am ready to buy a new if available.
HP DV 3000 is very old, speed might be very slow, rather i will rip the content to laptop and burn the DVD.

Has anybody used EasyCap adapter? please advice.

If you need to edit and author the content (add chapters, entry points, menus), then you will have to capture the content on PC anyway.

The quality of VCR/VCP will be very important.

I have a Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge for capture. I have converted my home videos to DVD that way. I authored the DVDs and even made motion menus.

I am going to SP road in Bangalore for any newly available VCR/VCP.
Does anybody have idea where i can get the brand new in Bangalore?

I Have Panasonic VCP ( written VCR - can see record button but cannot locate tuner controls) NV-SJ3MK2 with box in near mint condn. IT has RCA in Outs (mono) With on screen display. maybe you need to clean its head as tested some very bad casettes. Can pack and ship
PM if interested

Is any manufacturer even making VCP/VCR these days?

I don't think anybody manufacturers it.
There should be some last stock in some store.

4yrs back when i went to buy some RCA cable in Ulsoor, that shop had VCR/VCP. It is very old electronic shop run by some Rajastan Marwaris. They sell all outdated/china products to the lower-mid class. That shop is closed due to road widening.

The only place where VCRs are still available and VHS tapes still sold is USA. Of course, the players will be NTSC only and not to mention 110V/60Hz.

I still own a Sony VCR and it is stereo too (SLV-X822). It is still doing great inspite of small niggles here and there. If you were in Pune, I would have let you borrow it.

Hi Raghu!

Am also recently bitten by the VHS to DVD bug for a whole bunch of VHS Home videos a good 20 years old and just rediscovered from my attic..

Any update on how successful you were in your quest? How were the options in SP road?

I am based in Bangalore and also have a AKAI VCR which needs some servicing (Head cleanup and belts to be tightened, otherwise is working fine, no video but excellent audio o/p)

I need pointers on some good and reliable VCR service options, even open to buying a good working condition VCR.

Any inputs from you and other members very much appreciated...

Ahhh... the VHS Conversion idea raises its head again. I must do this some day, and preferably before the tapes decompose!

Do you happen to know if that, or any other device, works with Linux?

What is the condition of your tapes? Can you see any fungus? If there is fungus it will be very difficult to convert them yourself and you might be better off getting them done professionally.

Has anybody got some way to get rid of fungus at home?

There are about a hundred of them, all in pretty good condition, some have a little fungus but I guess running it thru the vcr - just fwding to the end and rewinding back fully once seems to clear off those (from the tape but onto the VCR head). Used to do that in the good ol' 80's....

The tapes are good, the VCR works but is slightly dragging its feet (the speed is a little offkey) and needs to be serviced. When initially ran a tape for the first time in over ~10 years, there was no audio and video - just noise.. then ran a good tape for about 2 hrs, that brought back the audio, then subsequently the video, presently the video plays a little slow with a good deal of typical VHS noise, watchable but the noise is annoying...

If only could get hold of a good technician who could service the vcr.. I dont think there are still any VHS-DVD conversion services left ...

Usually capture card will not be an issue. There may be many in the market. The problem will be finding a good quality VCR/VCP.
