Let's leave aside the question as to whether or not one would want to, and assume that, at least occasionally, such a thing may be useful

Most Windows users who need to AB[X] files are probably using the plugin for Foobar, and don't need anything else. I can't say that there is no alternative for Linux (or Mac) but I haven't found one until today. Please contribute if you know of one.
Lacinato ABX/Shootouter Blind Testing tool --- for Linux, Windows or MAC. Free, of course
It's cross-platform because it's JAVA. It comes with its own RTE components, so no need to install JAVA RTE if you don't have it already.
All I have done so far is to install it and make sure it runs...
