Cubox vs Rasp Pi Vs Rasp Pi 2

Hi Sivaguru, Guys,

Thanks for leading the discussion :) .

I checked the E350 board with USB 3, it has only PCI 2. Is there a big difference in PCIE 2 Vs PCIE 3?

If I need to go for Intel Combo Boards, would it be only NUC is there any other configuration available ?

Prasanna KV

if its PCIE x16 even if ver 2.0 you are good to go with any current gen GPU.

OK. Even if I find e350n with USB3 (and PCIE 2 slots) etc, what would be
the power consumption of this combination?.

I really like the Intel NUC for its power consumption. I think the only cons
I see with the NUC is the lack of DTS-HD pass-through which is OK with
me. The other con is that it lacks a co-axial SPDIF out.

So will this Intel NUC be able to handle all playback from Kodi without any
stuttering (frame rate drops etc) for sure?. Because I dont want to spend
17k to find out one way or the other.

Thank you.

Hi Prasanna,

The ebay link for the E350n shows that it does not have USB3.0.
It also has only PCI slot. Hope you realize that.

Also the specs show that it can take 2 x 1.5V DDR3 RAM. I think
the key here would be the 1.5v, so I think you need to take care
of that. There may be additional items that you might need to
look for when you decide on the RAM.

Thanks,
Sivakuru

Well I have been running, OpenELEC on NUC and was able to play full BD ISO so I dont find any reason it shoudl not be able to play anything if KODI is configured on windows and on OpenELEC DTS MA also passes through just fine.

Hi Sivaguru,

I ordered it on friday and have cancelled it on the same day after i noticed it. Flipkart sells it but it is costing Rs 5100. I intend to wait for sometime to buy it.

Prasanna KV

The one that flipkart sells also seem to be without the USB3 and PCI-E slot.

Anyways, meanwhile I was running some tests on my existing system and
looks to me like the framerate issues that I am seeing seem to be an issue
with the video encoding itself. The reason is I saw the frame rate issues
not with all videos and those videos that show the problem also show the
same issue with my WDTV player. So, I am not going to jump the gun on
this just yet. I am going to test my existing system for some more time and
then upgrade/change if it becomes an absolute necessity.

Thanks,
Sivakuru

^Sorry. I understand your frustration but I will be testing my current setup
for the next couple of weeks and then decide. I am prepared now with what
I need to do in case if I need to change, its just that I dont want to take
a decision in haste, after all its a matter of not just a few rupees, but I can
totally understand you. I am sure all that discussion will be of help even for
me, if not for now, but later when I upgrade and I am sure the information
that you and Musicbee have shared would help lot others too.

Its just that I too installed OpenElec only couple of weeks back and since
then I had watched couple of movies and those were stuttering, so I thought
the setup was no good, however over the last Sunday, I saw a couple of
more movies from a different encoder (even with DTS) and they did not
exhibit any issue, it is only then I went back and started doing some more
research, comparison etc and I thought the video encoding itself could be an
issue.

Playing around with different encoders is good. After a lot of trial and error StaxRip H.265 encoding is what I use to compress my Blu-rays for the home NAS so everybody in the family can stream on demand.

TBH you are better off sticking with a mainstream OS with DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) and hardware acceleration like Windows 8. Windows 8 is pretty good out of the box, never had issues even playing H.265, HEVC content on it, while the same cannot be said of Windows 7 (needs the right codecs and players) and even XMBC. I've not tried OpenELEC for H.265, HEVC, but nearly a year ago when assembling a new HTPC I did read that XMBC/Kodi, OpenELEC, etc. did not have support for H.265, HEVC. Windows 8 OTOH only needs replacement of the start menu with something like Classic Start Menu and supports all formats. In the future the need for 4K support is only going to get more demanding...

Hi Guys,

I just got a message that CM Elite 130 case is delivered. I am still need to order for motherboard. I shall post the pics in the evening.

Is there any other suggestion for the motherboard, considering the availability issue with Gigabyte E350n with USB 3 & PCIE 2.0.

I have gone ahead and ordered Rasp pi 2 thru my friend as well. Planning to test it out in parallel.

Prasanna KV

Hi Guys,

For Past two days i am torn between options on board i need to go for.

1. Gigabyte E350n (Current Variant available):
a. Does not have PCI E :
b. Does not have USB 3

2. Intel 1900J ?
a. I understand, there is a issue in playing DTS-MA.

I already have a CM Elite 130 Itx box. I need to go for a ITX motherboard.

Any recommendations please. In worst case i guess i shall go for E350n itself.

Prasanna KV

Any particular need to go with APUs, (combo boards) if you have budget why not independent itx board and then install a CPU on it, i.e go independent ....

Hi Sam,

No I am open for seperate components as well. My requirements are pretty simple :

1. Only HTPC no gaming
2. scalable support 4k if i upgrade in couple of years
3. 3D Support
4. USB 3
5. Preferably esata ;-) (not mandatory)
6. PCI E port for adding in a grpahics card if needed at later stage.

All this in sub 10-12 K

Cheers,
Prasanna KV

10-12K will be impossible ....... I can suggest

1. Intel 3 GHz LGA 775 Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor .......3000
2. Gigabyte GA-G41M Motherboard ------ 5500
3. Corsair valure RAM ....................3000
4, GT 640 4GB version......................................5000

thats 15500 .....GPU is important

I edited GPU to 640 as its 4K complaint

Hi Sam,

I am looking for a mini itx cabinet. I guess mobo you have recommended is matx.

I am thinking of going for

  • AMD AM1 Athlon 5350 Quad core 2.05 GHz, 2 MB Cache -Rs. 3900
  • AMD AM1 Board MSI : AM1I -Itx 16x,S, L, U3, H - Rs. 2200
  • Corsair 2 GB RAM - Rs 1350

Total Rs 7500 (approx)

Would there be any issues with this config?

Regards,
Prasanna KV

Whats the exact model number of the mobo I could not google one from the info you mentioned or provide me the link ....
