Was planning on adding a DAC or reciever to my current setup, but was not sure which would be better-DAC or Reciever. My current budget is Rs.15k.
setup: PC-> Forte 7.1-> DAC/Reciever -> Speakers&ATH-A700
Also i am NOT intereseted in sourround setup, just stereo.
SO which one should i go for DAC or Reciever? And also which one?

Please help me decide..
Thanks in advance..

Rambo,
I am not sure what the forte 7.1 is.
But even if you got a dac how would it power your speakers? You would need an amp/receiver anyways.

since you are interested in stereo, you should consider an integrated instead of a receiver. If I were in your position, I would go for a decent USB DAC vs. an integrated.

Forte 7.1 is sound card...
Well my speakers are active, so i assume an amp is not required..

What is an Integreated? i planning on using the Optical Out of my sound card or my onboard audio which gives surround sound for the games i play..

If this is for games then simply buy a 5 or 7 speaker system from Logitech or such.

To know what integrateds are you are only a few clicks away via the search option :)

No... this is not for games.. I want to improve is for music keeping my current option of using the surround sound while gaming,so that i don't have keep pluging and re-pluging the connection.. Its a real pain doing it if you understand..

When i searched it gave results like integrated amps ... so just wanted to know if you were taking about them or speakers with amps integrated??

musical fidelity v-dac and beresford caiman should both be in your price range and pretty decent although i have not heard them.i have auditioned the cambridge audio dac magic and its a major improvement over the cheap sound cards fitted into most computers.at 22-23 K its worth the money and loaded with features which will see you through a couple of upgrades.

Rambo,
Which active speakers are you using?
You can get a DAC like the Maverick D1, Gigaworks DAC, Nuforc udac which will improve you music SQ but ultimately your speakers have to be good for music.

Integrated amp usually refers to a combination of a pre amp and power amp as a one box solution. As Marsillians said a good integrated stereo amp would be best for music. Just search the forums and you will find lots of info on it.

Currently using just a 2.1 altec lansing(also active).. Was planning on getting the A2's.. But decided to get the DAC first then the speakers..

Looks like its to be hard to select:V-DAC vs DAC magic vs Maverick D1
My take on the three:
V-DAC: No headphone out (correct me if i am wrong) and afforable but including shipping not so affordable. Can find it only in Amazon.

CA DAC magic: Too many good reviews but quiet costly

Maverick D1: Looks good and affordable. just checked ebay some is selling it for 13k odd.
