Guys, i know this has been beaten to death - but a very specific query?

HP - was recommended this one dv6-3085TX Intel Core i3 370 (2.4GHz) 3GB 320 GB DVDRW 512 MB 15.6" Win 7 Basic Cherry Black

Dell: for a i think around Rs 6k more - the website says i can get this one -

Dell(TM) Studio 15 Laptop (T540613IN8)
Intel Core i5-460M (2.53GHz, 2Core/4Threads, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 3MB cache)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (English)
4GB (2GBx2) 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (operates at 1066MHZ for Core i3/i5, and i7-620M processors)
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
15.6 " 720p WLED (1366x768) Display with TrueLife
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 - 1GB

Now i need this only for home use - will play some music, see some cds (low), internet and microsoft office - some games but not too much.

I have not really researched Lenovo too much as yet.

Need your help on which one do you think makes sense? I read somewhere on this forum earlier that HP generally had better after sales service ... how is the lenovo service?

Dell has a policy by which they will not look at your equipment unless it is under warranty. As the model becomes older, the warranty renewal charges goes up. I am sure HP has a similar policy.

Toshiba follows a different methodology by which they have tied up with HCL and you have a nation wide service network. You may be able to get the product serviced even if you do not have a warranty.

Cheers

I will need to check that though - any thoughts on the 2 ones that i posted? Also, do you get Toshiba easily in Mumbai? How are the HCL laptops as well?

I have the Dell studio 15 and really like it. However I would add 3 yr comprehensive warranty for any laptop that I buy as they do tend to be easy to break or damage. I had keys pulled out of my keyboard by my then two month old son.

You can save some cash by using the i3 and 3gb ram if you are usage is light.

Build quality of lenovo is great, service poorer than dell/hp.

It has to be Dell. Mostly because of after sales service.

Do buy 3 years warranty. A laptop is going to be replaced in 3 - 4 years and this way you will get coverage for the usable life of laptop.

Quality wise, all three are same. HP/Lenovo/Dell have systems in each price range. So, from all three vendors you can get top of the line (Metal chasis, good quality PCBs) machines as well as budget machines.

Dell studio is perfect for home use.

I find HP warentee and service very good.
In fact once my part was not available ( it was mother board) they compensated with higher specked processor!ditto about DVD Rom ,they replaced with DVD writer!
also HP is selling for ages , so in mumbai out of warentee service and parts are available.
Toshiba of late sales was dismal.
BTW venkat sir HP must be having most no.of service centres. In mumbai every small region has one. I do not think HCL toshiba will beat it!

Hemanth, it is quite possible, and WOW, that is quite a list. My friends and I have taken 3 Toshibas to HCL, and they have all been repaired. In once case they even recommended a shop where we could get a power unit cheaper than from their own service centre.

I don't have any experience with HP, and I would really not like to comment on my experience with Dell.

Cheers

I find build quality of HP dv6-3xxx series damn good, and that brushed metal finish gives almost Mac Pro looks, but I would suggest yu to get ATI 5650 n 4GB RAM config. Intel i3 more than sufficient for you needs, as we never gonna use that i5/i7 Turbo-Boost much coz everything is going in a GPU accelerated computing nowadays.

Lenovo Thinkpads might be way outta yur budget, and I wouldn't suggest in getting Lenovo G Series, in fact Y-series too.

i would put my money on Hp, why because i have been using their notebooks from the past 7 years, in terms of quality, service and reliability my money would always be on Hp.

Thanks guys - gr8 feedback. I had one more question - it appears that the Dell laptops are generally less expensive than the HP ones - for example the 2 pieces that i listed earlier - it seems Dell packs more punch for the buck! or am i missing something here?

Dell offers better VFM. When I bought my business laptop I was looking for one that has a decent graphic card at an affordable cost. Dell was the best option. Equivalent model from Lenova/ Thinkpad was 20% more expensive!

I have a reason to believe that Dell offers better service (I think through TVS electronics). Since there is no good communication between DELL- TVS, they will replace anything in warranty period if you smartly handle the complaints. Once I had lost a race in NFS finals and I gave a blow on my keyboard in frustration. The optical and HDD drive below got damaged. Eventually I got them replaced one at a time by smartly dealing with their customer service proving that its a manf. defect. :eek:hyeah:

Dell also has a better battery performance AFAIK. My colleagues using HP are suffering from quick battery drain (may be a model specific problem). It may be possible to negotiate even further. I got it shipped directly from their B'lore factory. I told that I need 10 laptops for my office, reduced price by Rs. 4k and bought only one!:p

You are not saying as joke right?

AS dell used to supply WORST batteries and had a massive recall 3-4 years back,( BTW BATTERY SUPPLIER WAS SONY)

Fire Hazard Prompts Gigantic Dell Laptop Battery Recall - PCWorld

Computer maker Dell today said it will recall 4.1 million laptop computer batteries because of a potential fire hazard. It's reportedly one of the largest consumer electronics recalls in history.

The lithium-ion batteries being recalled are installed in 2.7 million laptops sold in the United States and 1.4 million sold overseas between April 2004 and July 18 of this year, Dell said.

"Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could cause a risk of fire," Dell said in a statement. The comapany said the overheating was caused by a manufacturing defect in batteries made for it by Sony.

Customers may continue to use the laptop computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received, the company said.

Dell to recall 4 million batteries - CNET News

Just google

Offcourse with changed supplier this might have changed...also same replacement service offered by HP to me.In fact when they were late they upgraded my parts ( Single core processor to Dual Core, 40 GB 1.8 Inch HDD to 80 GB 1.8 Incher!)

Just one thing: Comparing a Dell to a Thinkpad is like comparing an Akai to a Marantz. Quality doesn't come for free.

Dell too depends on models.
I have great experience with the studio 1735 im using presently, my office colleagues 4 of them are using studio 15 with no major problems since quite some time. Two friends are using Inspiron 1525 which is crap and is giving lot of problems after first year of use.

Tell me honestly, you rushed to reply to this post didn;t you. You are talking about a 4 year old news bro... Check the date.

Even GMs, VWs, Fords, Hondas and Toyotas have recalled their cars- it doesnt make them poor quality auto manufacturers. Nokia has many batches of poor batteries- still they are no. 1.

Just one thing: Comparing a Dell to a Thinkpad is like comparing an Akai to a Marantz. Quality doesn't come for free.

Everyone knows that I suppose. Here we are looking for best specs/ maximum features for minimum money. Obviously there is a compromise.

there are other laptops from MSI & Acer in d market having killer specs & low prices.last week in croma mumbai i came across one from MSI with deadly specs as intel core i3,4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD & 1 GB ATI Redeon graphics card with genuine windows 7 home premium edition @ somewhere around Rs 33,500 or maybe Rs 34,500...not to sure but definately below Rs 35000..this particular brand is also availble on ebay india maybe Rs 500-700 less...festive season Diwali etc there would be more such kind of deals where one could get value for money.then there was one from Acer with almost similar specs retailing 2 Rs 45000 in vijay sales..frankly i have no idea on reputation of these two brands especially acer..As far as I know MSI is some taiwainese brand which is being marketed & serviced in India by Priya International..I too am keen to buy a good vfm laptop & waiting for d right moment to buy one.waiting for the festival period of diwali to begin.m of d view that laptops from any brand are ok since the internal parts, circuitary etc are manufactured & suppied by third party vendors and not by the company selling the machines under their brand names. If one uses a laptop with care hardly any parts fail.Big organisations include the cost of marketing, branch offices & the huge support staff in the final price of their product.

Hey Ash, I am not an expert in this, but not sure if that logic works - i guess the importance is in the design of the machine and how the hardware interacts - the premium is on the assembly quality, service and well ofcourse reputation. In fact the dad of friend of mine was in PCP designing (the chip boards for TVs etc) and that took quite an effort and was regarded as a premium service - i presume the same would apply here as well

hey ,

i have worked for dell for over 2 long yrs and i knw what its like if you do not have warranty. if u can buy warranty for 3-4 yrs.. dell wud be a good buy but not best.

pros ( good service)

cons( no warranty-then u might get pissed off due to their charges)
(be careful with dell.the lcd hinges becomme loose very often)
(when u order with a tech first chk the order on website and pricing-
else u might get robbed.)

try to get the best pric e by callin sales cpl of times...lolz

hp again better and longer life then dell
however u get lesser vfm than other companies.
tends to be quite expensive.

other options..

lenovo yes to an extent.

how bout acer and compaq vfm and u pay additional for 4 yrs warranty.

no machine will gurantee you that it will work without any hick-ups
so when we have warranty and we are always on risk why not choose
a vfm product..

acer with same combo u gave will be 10k less.
for that money u can have 9-12c battery instead of 6cell

also additional warranty.

anytime u buy system for home use on 32-bit os.
do not buy more than 3gig ram as it will be unusable.
even after tweaking the codes inside windows.

also if its matter of looks. u can always buy skins from outside and change the way ur machine looks every 6 months. i do that hardly costs 80rs everytime.
