Denon AVR 1909 - First Impressions

My dealer was telling me denon 1909 or 2309 are not having enough power to drive 9.6. He was suggesting to go for higher models.

And which is better optical or coaxial or rca for audio interconnect.

Any ideas please

Cheers

The power handling capacity of the 9.6 is 40-200 watts. At 90 watts and 100 watts per channel, the 1909 and the 2309 have more enough power to drive the 9.6. Maybe the dealer wants you to spend more money? :)

RCA, Optical, or Coaxial? This depends upon what connection you are looking for.

1. If it is simple 2 channel analogue audio, simple coaxial cable with good RCA connectors is the best connection.

2. If your DVD player can decode multichannel sound and has 6 (5.1) or 8 (7.1) RCA out sockets and your AVR has corresponding input sockets, you can connect the DVD player to the AVR with 6 or 8 RCA cables. The decision to use this method depends upon the decoding capabilities of the DVD player versus that of the AVR. Unless you are using a high end DVD Player, the AVR, in most cases, will be able to do a better job of decoding.

3. If it is digital sound, you can use either coaxial or optical connections. Both have same capabilities. If you use optical connections just ensure that the cable is as straight as possible.

Hi guys,

While you are on this, can you please let me know much does a Denon2808 a/v cost in India? And is it a gud receiver to invest in?

Am coming to India next month, and here in US its on sale for 600$....which should be approx 28K? And a couple of thousands to the customs in India.

Thank you

Rs. 75900 is the MRP - though you could bargain for maybe 10-15% lesser as it is a older model and likely to get phased out. Good idea to get it from US, even considering attendent hassles.

The ProFX stall at the Times AV Exhibition at Goregaon, Mumbai are selling the 1909 for 36K.... But today is the last day guys..... Decision time!

Unless you require assistance in setting up the receivers here at your place I would suggest to buy it there and bring it here. You cant even compare the rates 1909 costing 42900 MRP and you can get around 38K i believe after bargain. This is low end comparing to 2808 so think about it. This is my personal opinion. If you are satisfied with my reply then as an appreciation of my advice you have to bring me Denon 1909 from there :D Happy shopping!

Hi all,

Just reporting that I am really enjoying myself with my Denon AVR 1909. Even at quite low volumes, its giving crystal clear sound esp. from the surrounds on my Wharfedale 9.6 7.1 setup. The video processing at default settings is real good. I haven't meddled with it since I haven't found time to read the manual in detail. :).

I have booked a 46inch Samsung LCD, model 46A650, which will be delivered in a couple of days. It cost me Rs.1.35 lakh at TMC, Begumpet, Hyderabad. I am sure I would have a wonderful HT experience with my setup. Once again, I thank Venkat and others who have guided me in selecting the various components of my HT.

Venkat, Eswar

I heard there are some issues with Denon1909. When we are watching movies suddenly the audio and video are lost for a second and then everything is quite normal it seems. Have you come across such a scenario.

Search "denon 1909 audio lost" in google this is the first link. Venkat I need your comments on this. One more point to this is that when we directly connect DVD and TV this Issue is not coming it seems. Im not sure is that anything to do with HDMI compatibility.

Eswar, Very happy to hear that you are enjoying I will have this set up done this week end :) Hope Polk Audio 6750 will also produce nice vocal and mid range sound.

Cheers.

Hi Sridhar,

I have had no such issues till now. Hopefully, I won't.:)

Reg the connections, I have connected my Philips DVD player to the 1909 through a Belkin HDMI cable and the Receiver to my LCD TV through a Monster HD 1000 HDMI cable.

Good luck for you too.

Cheers.

Sridhar, have you personally experienced this problem? I did read the link you gave, and it looks to me there is HDMI cable problem. As mentioned by one of the people, the AVR and the TV are not communicating properly and because of that losing data for a few seconds.

If you facing a similar problem, just call your dealer and ask him to take care of it. I have watched a 1909 for a few hours, and I did not see any issues.

Cheers

Have you tried upscaling SD content, preferably any TV channels?
If yes, is there any noticable difference (improvement)?

Hi kumareshwar,
even I would like to know, how is the picture quality if you upscale SD signals through denon 1909. e.g. Tata sky or something similar.

Hi,

Both DVDs and the Tatasky signal esp. the Sports Channels which I mostly watch look better through my 1909. There is definitely a noticeable improvement in quality. I have not experienced any problem whatsoever with the Denon. Sridhar's info might relate to the HDMI cable and not to the 1909.

How have you connected the tatasky to your AVR

Is it through rca.

Are you passing video and audio through AVR.

That means you need to have AVR on everytime you wish to watch TV

Am I correct ?

No Venkat. This is just a review i have read. May be you are right it was also present in the AVS Forumn discussion for Denon 1909 but they can get to a conclusion though. I have just booked will update you the progress. :)
