What facility does this software provide?

Does subwoofer have to be of same make as the rest of the speakers. Eg can I have a Polk or taga sub instead of wharfedale sub ?

most good software media players have bass management support - I use foobar and media player classic - both of them support this

I haven't used bass management in media player..I think he can't use Foobar as his req is movies.. So MPC..

Just one question. How does the bass management happen in this kind of system ? Usually one can specify in the AVR what kind of frequency / cut off is to be used. How does a PC decide the subwoofer cut off ?

If you can DIY, then build something like this:

This is a 5.1 amp I made for a friend.
as you already have a pc get a good sound card. you will not be disappointed.
