DIY sub to complement my 3 way DIY

My tiny 2.1 (another DIY project) with a 3.5" subwoofer on my desktop makes this type of music express itself so well.
This is because you were listening to the system nearfield. It takes the room out of the equation. If you want that same performance then you will have to do it with proper sub setup and in room equalization.

I agree with you on the fact that I need a sub woofer in my living room setup to cover my music taste.

But I disagree with your assertion that the small system sounds good because of near field. I can stand anywhere in the room and hear the lows. In fact I was stunned when I connected it for the first time. Even at very low volumes, there is beautiful, clear low frequencies everywhere in the room. Of course there is eq here. I adjusted the cutoff freq and the volume of the sub with respect to the left and right channels. The subwoofer driver is mounted on a spherical enclosure and calculated port area and length.

Arun
