Looking at various types of speakers available in the market make me wonder do certain group of loudspeakers (or designers) display some attributes and gunas. This made me classify them in 3 types Sattvic, Rajasik, Tamsik.
Sattva - These types are very simple speakers that look very modest
and sound very neutral. They are very open in the mid-range, with no thumping bass or brightness of the highs. The stereo imaging will also be precise and effortless. They are very simple looking and does faithful reproduction of the audio / music signals without adding or subtracting anything from the original recordings. They usually will be priced a little higher and not quite affordable for majority of the buyers.
Rajas - These types are jazzy looking and give more importance to external looks, presentation and are also marketed very heavily. They sound not so open in the mid-range and have thumping (read boom) bass and brightness in the highs. The mid-range will be far less from being mellow. The stereo imaging will miss the low frequency center imaging and may image in the mids and highs.These speakers may add more bass and highs which were not present in the original recording to announce their presence. They will be a little expensive to buy and will be within reach for many buyers.
Tamas - These speakers look quite dull and the mids will be very cluttered and with nothing to talk about lows and highs. There could be major phase issues and the speakers will be not involving. They will be heavily marketed and lots of hype will be surrounding these speakers. They will be priced moderately and will be within reach of many buyers.
It will be very interesting to note what kind of speakers are preferred by music lovers and if the attributes of the speakers have something to do with individuals at the time of buying decision.
