Yamaha HT Package Model 299 & 2910.
These 2 modes are almost similar except 2 features are missing in 299 and the price point of view there is huge difference (10K extra for 2910).

Surround Sound Processing Feature: Comparison between 299 & 2910

Feature Model-299 Model-2910
-----------------------------------------------------------
Dolby TrueHD Yes Yes
Dolby Digital Plus Yes Yes
Dolby Digital NO Yes
DTS-HD Master Audio Yes Yes
DTS Digital Surround NO Yes

Surround Sound Feature missing in 299 model are
1. Dolby Digital
2. DTS Digital Surround
Rest all features are 1:1 same including Speakers & Sub-woofers.

Model 299 cost is 34k & 2910 is 44k

Someone please suggest me, can I buy Model 299 or spending another 10K will be worth buying model 2910 having these 2 features in the system.

Thanks.

Depends on the source material.
If the DVD is older then it will be DD. Since both receivers support DD+, older discs will play. Newer BDs typically come in DD+
DD is AC-3 codec and DD+ is Enhanced AC-3
Same goes for DTS and DTS-HD.

Source discs specify what is the sound format used on the cover and menu.

Cheers,
Raghu

Yamaha 299 supports all above decoding formats. AVR which supports DTS-HD, certainly has regular surround formats decoding capabilities. I can confirm this as my friend has 299.
These models are similar. One optical input is missing in newer model.

Depends on your source material. Over 5 years will all be DTS and DD only.

That said new gen codecs are Dolby Atmos and DTS X... so in a manner of speaking Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are already old.

You can go with only DTS and DD if that's your primary content (mine is).

Or you can wait for new AVRs that will handle both Dolby Atmos and DTS X.

The YHT 299 supports all formats that 2910 does .The only difference is I feel is there will difference in the amp capacity.
YHT 299 -2013 model
YHT 2910 - 2014 Model.

You can decide based on your budget.
