Hi everyone,

a friend of mine is going to US on personal visit in a week and he will back in 10 days. Is importing the following from Emotiva
UMC-200 (7.1 pre) and UPA 700 (80W x 7 power) for setting up a 7.1 system a good idea ?
i have not heard the combination. will it go well with speakers available in India ?
please share your thoughts. opinions are welcome.
Also, is it possible for my friend to swipe my credit card in US ?

Not sure about how they sound or perform on your first question, but regarding the CC, your friend cannot use yours in US. Please do not hand over your CC to somebody else, its your property and you are the authorized user. As Emotiva sells their equipment directly on the site you can book the same from India using your CC online on there site and give the shipping address of your friend in US.

Thanks

What you mean good idea? Its a great idea.

I bought UMC200 recently and am very happy with its performance.
They are certainly not be the best in SQ but Emotiva simply means VFM.
You can pay by Paypal so your Indian credit card pretty much does the job.

Indian credit cards doesnt work on Emotiva site, it seems.
Atleast for me, it didn't. I tried with two c.cards.
In the end, I had to use paypal only.

i guess they verify identity before swiping. i was trying to avoid custom duty if possible :licklips:
thank you for the info.
what was the final cost ? i mean what was the custom duty that you paid ?

Product cost : USD 599
Shipping charge : 0
Customs : 0
:)
Thanks to one of the FM who was kind enough to carry it for me.
Customs was 0 since it was within the duty free limit (his entire family came to India from US)

Note that now damage is more for any imports due to rupee value touching new lows.
You are paying around 2k to 2.5k more only for UMC200 due to poor exchange value prevailing now:(

Practical consideration: Add up the total shipping weight and make absolutely sure that your friend is able and willing to carry this on top of his own luggage and shopping. Check that it is going to physically fit in his cases too.

You should also be aware that, if you want your friend to just carry this stuff through the green channel, you asking him to commit a crime for you. Sure, it'll probably work out, and, even if he is stopped, only cost some cash, but you should both know what you are doing.

Instead of buying a dedicated preamp (like Emotiva UMC-200), Can't we use any other 7.1 AVR's pre-amp feature for this purpose? What wold be the difference?

If you are talking about the preamp section with anolog input (direct mode), there is no signature attached to the output. It has a very flat frequency response in this mode and a very low noise floor.

If you are talking about overall performance (considering the DAC section too) it is still superb value for money. The sound is airy and very detailed.

Believe me, the preout in entry level AVRs cannot match the performance of dedicated prepro's like this.
