ESPN HD coming soon in Tata Sky and Airtel

In another forum somebody has mentioned that ESPN HD has been added on ch no.406 on TataSky, can anyone confirm that! What time is the opening ceremony?

I hope they don't mess it up like the FIFA opening ceremony! (bad audio, early cutoff etc)

223 ESPN HD channel . You need to subscribe .

How much is the subscription cost?

EDIT: I just received a message from Airtel saying that ESPN HD was available on Ch 223 and taht I had to pay Rs. 150 + tax to subscribe to it.

This is pure daylight robbery from Airtel. First of all they have only one HD channel and tehy have the audacity to charge 150 something buck for a channel which will probably be around for just a month:mad:

Are Tata Sky subscribers supposed to pay any subscription?

I am watching opening ceremony on sunHD.. star cricket HD (ch. 960)
it is added free of cost.. along with ch 961..running some test signal..

PQ of star cricket looks good but sound is 2 channel stereo as of now..

This all DTH providers have added HD channels related to CWC except Reliance Digital TV (who must be having deepest pockets). Rs. 3 Crs (contract amount with ESPN - got this from WWW) should be peanuts for them.

I am trying their CC nos. from morning but the call is getting dropped automatically. Can we sue RDTV for closing the CC line?

Why-O-Why I chose RDTV?

BTW, can some one upload pics of HD telecast?

On Tata Sky+HD, ESPN HD and Star Cricket HD are both outputting Dolby Digital sound; However, true Dolby digital is coming only in Star Cricket where voice is coming through centre speaker...

Is it a pre-condition that only if voice comes from center spkr, then only it is true Dolby Digital?

Live telecast in 5.1 may sound different from normal movies or pre-recorded content where most of dialogue/vocals is concentrated at the center becos of luxury of dubbing/mixing in sound studio as per the wish. Not sure during live telecast of sports event this can be achieved 100%. Experts may wish to throw some lights on this.

when voice and other channels like bass and music is properly routed and "segregated" through all 5 speakers then it true DD otherwise its just 2 channels sounds coming through all 5...

You might be true in this case. However all the five channels in DD are full range and center can produce ANY sound including bass and treble. Only .1 subwoofer output is used for deep bass "effect" sound.

Am no expert at this, but AFAIK, only the .1 ie. subwoofer channel is dedicated to low bass or LFE signals - any of the rest of the channels can carry any range from 20Hz-20Khz.

For me surround sound would mean "being at the center of the action" - so voice or for that matter any other sound can come from any of the speakers.

While the HD broadcast most certainly is true 5.1 Dolby Digital, the actual surround effect experienced by us listeners is another matter altogether since this depends on the way microphones are placed, mixing etc.

Usual 5.1 movie soundtracks are mixed in such a way, that you have the dialogue coming mostly through the centre speaker.

And regarding the .1 LFE channel, you are right in saying it contains the low frequency sounds. In AVRs which handle bass properly, the .1 signal is sent to the subwoofer, "along with" low frequency sounds from the other 5 or 7 channels.

This is totally correct.

The .1 LFE channel is a dedicated sub-woofer channel and thus it is automatically routed to the sub-woofer. The low frequencies from other channels is another matter though. By default the other channels in Dolby Digital and higher audio formats are all 'full' frequency range channels and thus by default the pre/pro routes the entire frequency range to it's corresponding channel. Ofcourse this is dependent on how the bass management is setup in the pre/pro. If you have full range speakers, then you should allow the entire frequency range to be directed to the speaker, otherwise a cutt off range for each channel can be selected, which will determine the frequency range below which the signal is routed to the sub-woofer.
