Expensive AVR vs Cheap AVR+Power amp

Hehe.... Read my post above "Budget boleto sasta wala" :D

Yes the A500 is a nice machine 150W/8ohms. The other option is the Crown XLS 1000 200W/8ohms.

If you want to go really budget why not use a Norge power section.

navin till now many people have proved so may options. Have you decided which way to go? You have to decide, or else there will be pages of suggestion with no outcome.

Sorry. I figured the discussion would be good for others as well.

For my application I am considering the following (as far as AVRs go):
The living room speakers will be powered by a Denon 3312 or Marantz 6006 + Behringer A500 or Crown XLS2500, the bedroom would get a NAD 757 or Rotel 1550 (since the needs are 5.1 and I do not have room for a power amp), and my son will get the Onkyo 709 or Yamaha A810 or if he a good and lucky boy the SR7005.

is 757 5.1 or 7.1?

5.1 using the rear surrounds in bi-amp mode for the front speakers.

I assume this mean that 4 of the 7 channels will be used for the front speakers and the other 3 channels will be center and rears.

Ofcourse one wishes one could afford the 775 or 1560 but if wishes were horses....:-)

Air core toroids are very rare except for very high frequency work. Are you sure it uses air core? Even though at 2 to 2.5kgs i doubt it to be a 400VA.

A 400VA ferrite core toroid should weigh a minimum of 4 kilos.

This is the transformer: Antek - AN-4435 I underestimated the weight, it's 9lbs = 4kg.

No, I am not sure about the air core thing, I thought all toroids were air core :D Even spec doesn't say anything about air core.

Norge has a power amp too ? Any Indian distributors for Behringer/Crown XLS?

I heard Norge power amp with Norge towers & sound was very warm.Midrange was very laid back & I missed details.May be the preamp used(norge)for it is not the best.

- dont buy AVr if you dont have a dedicated space to do HT setup,no u will not be able to get near 60% of cinema hall feeling
- most low end Avrs have cheap decoders so there lesser quality of o/p
- if you have premium avr,are u sure all movies u have are encoded well ?

for music ,
i have YAM Avr , observed dedicated stereo amp is easily 20% better sounding.
for me 2 channel works

if you have a smaller room and want surround sound, you must audition violet wireless system. I heard it at fm Vinay's house and it was VERY good for movies. And he has done the installation so NEATLY, you will fall in LOVE with looks too.

Kittu,

Parts Express will ship to India.

The other option in this budget is DIY.

I have used the Yamaha 4180 for portable Pro audio use but I dont know how this amp will would work for home audio. Besides at about $700 it is expensive.

XM Series | Power Amps | Products | Yamaha

Wow never new Yamaha makes such powerful power amps as of now.:) Thanks for the info.

But still these are not even close to Yamaha MX-10000 spec of 1200 watts @ 1 ohms :D

I created a thread, wait here it is : http://www.hifivision.com/vintage-audio/22499-does-anybody-here-owns-any-these-beauties.html

A new option might open up for me. An old friend might have 4 ESP P101 modules. In the 70s and 80s he had worked extensively with amplifiers and I remember he had this module that had 2 pairs of Hitachi Metal Can MOSFETs in them. At that time I goaded him into building an amp with 3 pairs of the 2SK / 2SJ transistors. Maybe just maybe he might find 4 of these. If he does I am definitely going to bi-amp the front channels! :yahoo:

4 600VA Torroid/R-Core transistors will be needed as well rectifiers and capacitors and a case but this was an excellent amp so it might be worth it.

Which AVRs are you refering to? From what I understand the decoders in the Marantz 6006, Yamaha A810, etc.. are not that poor.

In the past man manufactuers made some beautiful products. I will always hate myself for leaving my Onkyo P308 and M308s behind in the US when I left. Who does not remember the Denon DP59L or Technics SL M1 tunrtables for example?

Then came the bean counters and VCs and today audio brands are traded like baseball cards.

Q 1 - How does the Arcam AVR400 compare against the new NAD 777?
The NAD 757 is a lot cheaper than the AVR400 so it's not fair to compare the NAD 757. The NAD 777 is a bit more than AVR 400 but more direct competition.

Q 2 (AVR + Power amp combo) - the options are Anthem MRX 300 + PVA 5 and Marantz SR7005 + MM7055. The Anthem combo has a more expensive power amp and less expensive AVR.
The NAD T955 has been discontinued or a NAD AVR+955 combo could also have been considered.

BTW has anyone experienced the services of The Upgrade Company?

How about a Rock Solid AVR like Yamaha DSP-Z9? Although it does not have HDMI, it's power supply and sheer power is mindblowing. How about using this as an amp with a pre-amp via Multi Ch Analog Inputs of the Z9?

Is the RX-Z9 still in production?

I can share my experience...

I earlier had Denon 1611 + jamo s426 ...

then i heard Marantz sr6005 + gershman acoustics Full range speark...guess what Denon & jamo was sold instatntly...
then first time i heard preprocessor and amplifier

then i heard Classe ssp-300 + B&K reference 2002. + gershman guess what happened

Marantz was sold straight away....

Will never go back to all in one solution...love the preprocessor and amp ...

Next upgrade is my either DIY speaker with Ribbon tweeter....and DIY cables for speakers...

My only advice build it yourself...slowly...buy used things and then resell it...slowly in time you will have great system

Unfortunately most of us on this forum don't have access to a good resell market.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
