Expensive AVR vs Cheap AVR+Power amp

Hehe.... Read my post above "Budget boleto sasta wala" :D

I was able to source an used Power Amplifier (Sonodyne SPA 202) from this forum. Got it 12K. I have connected it to my Marantz Receiver which has 6.1 Pre-Outs. @ less than half the volume on the receiver, it can bring my Wharfedale Diamond 9.2 (86 db sensitivity) sweet sounding speaker to full punch. I think if i had a speaker with more db sensitivity, it should do even better.

I suggested you can try an used stereo Amp from NAD. They are very good in delivering what is on paper. Infact even better. Try for NAD amplifier which outputs consistent 50W power. It should do justice.

I was able to audition the NAD 326BEE amp with my towers (courtesy Svkndv) . I did not like the sound. I felt the vocals were more loud and instruments sound is lost somewhere. It sounded kind of very warm and not fast enough to handle the kind of music I listen to.

Just my two untrained ears.:)

Marantz stereo amp sounded good with Paradigm studio monitor when I auditioned lastly.

I hope you already have an premaplier/receiver with Pre-Outs. So adding a NAD stereo amp to your pre amp will not change the Sound signature.

Yamaha 667 , Paradigm monitor 7 ver 6 and Paradigm CC190 .

So try loaning a stereo amp from HFV peers in bangalore & test your results... You are good to go....:ohyeah:

If you are convinced, then you can start scouting for an used amplifer to add to your setup.

I am doing the same here. :D Looking for a power amp solution so I will have the same punch for movies and music using my AVR as a pre processor.

Do you think Sonodyne SPA 202 can be sourced in chennai?

Class D Audio SDS-254 Kit - Amplifier Kits

And a nice amp enclosure from magma

Wow that is colloquially called as Super D amp in Audiocircle. I was experimenting and purchased a CDA254 amp + power supply. I had earlier used a (supposedly) 400VA amp but found the Bass lean though it has terrific mid range and crisp highs. So put it on the attic for sometime.

After buying and listening to the AP tube pre + SS power amps and Cadence Arista speakers for sometime. Since the Cadence mid range is so terrific, I wanted to see how the Class D fares here. Took it out and paired it with the AP tube pre. Sure it has lean lows but the mid range came alive so beautifully that it beats any other power amp 5 times its cost by miles.

After that, I had ordered a 320VA R core trafo through Omishra to see how it fares.

@Sound1, what is the power rating of the trafo and how much does it weigh?

Would love to do an audition, provided if sound1 is fine with it. :licklips:

You are most welcome. Pls call me one day in advance. Will PM my number...

I keep visiting Bangalore and would love to hear your amp.

300W 4 ohms and 600 8ohms, It might rip my speakers apart don't you think?

Price is 199$ only. Still I would prefer something that can be locally procured. :)

Below seems to be more realistic power ratings.

The following power stats are at less than 1% distortion (THD):

4 ohm stereo speakers = 185 watts RMS (300 watts peek)
8 ohm stereo speakers = 125 watts RMS (175 watts peek)

8 ohm mono speaker = 375 watts RMS (600 watts peek)

Distortion < 0.01%
Frequency Response 20Hz-20Khz, +0/-1 dB
Signal to noise >100 dB

Again 375 Watts is in Bridged Mono Mode. Probably 150 Watts RMS in two channel. Should not affect your speakers.

Another option in local market could be QSC GX5. Should cost around 25k.

@Sound1, what is the power rating of the trafo and how much does it weigh?

I believe it is a 400VA toroid (air core), weighs around 2 - 2.5kg. But from what I hear in AC, people are getting great result after they upgraded the power supply caps from 6 x 4,700uf to 6 x 10,000uf instead of transformer. Probably you should try that for the missing low end.

Anytime captain! I'm just a call away :) [check your PM]

I don't think Sonodyne SPA 202 can be sourced from Chennai. Try ur luck in the wanted section. I know the chennai Sonodyne dealer very well. When i checked with him last year, he said that they have discontinued the Amp.

As far as i know this Sonodyne power amp has 575 VA output. So approx >=345W is the power consumption. It clips @ 120 ~ 130 W/Channel @ 8 Ohms. it Should deliver 90 ~ 100 W RMS per channel consistently. So sad such a nice product was discontinued....

Oh yeah, I've heard that; even our knowledgeable forum member Grubyhalo also suggested the same. I've already got the trafo. Yet to pay for it though. (Omishra is one decent soul whose patience I'm testing :o)

Will surely also change the caps.

Gotcha buddy. Will be in touch.

I believe it is a 400VA toroid (air core), weighs around 2 - 2.5kg.

Air core toroids are very rare except for very high frequency work. Are you sure it uses air core? Even though at 2 to 2.5kgs i doubt it to be a 400VA.

A 400VA ferrite core toroid should weigh a minimum of 4 kilos.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
