Floor Standers for my setup!!

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for floor standers. I have a Yamaha AV receiver RX-V730 and a Yamaha HT. Its pretty old one. I will be changing my AV receiver(one under consideration is Denon AVR-1910) by the end of the year and during that time will be adding a stereo amp from NAD or Marantz. So I need a speaker which will deliver even after I've updated my set up with the new goodies.

All you audio wizards out there, please help me coz I'm a novice in this field.

Couple of questions. Since I've been shopping around I got these quotes from different dealers. Are they the best quotes?

Mirage Omni 550 - Rs. 38,300/-
Tannoy Mercury F4 - Rs. 37,000/-

And what you guys think about the Q Acoustics demo product sale by Babbler. Is it worth looking into. I'm planning to check out Wharfdale and Jamo. Do you have any suggestions for checking out more manufacturers?

There are tons of threads on this same question. Mostly Denon 1910 with Wharfedale as the winning combo suggested by experts.

but you need to give more inputs like

1) What is your prefered choice of music
2) What is your room size (room accoustics)
3) Are you looking for a stereo setup / HT
4) What brands have you auditioned before etc
5) What is your budget


Since you owned a mirage before why not try a better one this time.

Right now the speaker is for HT. But I'm planning to add a good Stereo set up towards the end of the year.

at a price range of 30-40k and room area of 120 sq ft i would suggest bookshelves over floorstanders. much better sq

12' x 10' is ok for BS only. My 15' x 11' is catered to by satellites ......

@ 40k budget you can get a good pair of BS and a nice Sub too.

For what reasons are you upgrading your receiver... I believe it is a 6.1 Channel receiver.. I think it will serve you good until you find Bluray discs @ affordable prices. ( i mean 100Rs / Disc).. instead i would suggest spend on some Quality speakers & subwoofer....

Denon AVR 1910 is a 7.1 Channel receiver... I am sure your Yamaha Reiver is pretty good. You are NOT loosing anything if you are not upgrading to a 7.1 receiver.. from your current receiver...

what you guys think about the Q Acoustics demo product sale

This is a general statement and not going into specifics. Demo products generally go through a lot of abuse. Many dealers offer home auditions and what happens there is anyone's guess.

Moreover, shifting the equipment so many times involving manual labour for handling the heavy stuff takes it's toll on the construction of the boxes.

See, I live in a rented house and I'm not planning to be in that state forever. So out of the 3 bedrooms one is my AV room. And by design my wife gave me the smallest room as my AV room

Now that I've decided to update my kit, I though I'll get the best possible available money can buy coz when I move into another place with sufficient space for my AV room I shouldn't be lacking in equipment and I don't want to sell and start over this thing.

@avidyarthy @afj is there a problem if I put a floor stander in such a small room?

@kittu1977, I have a DefTech sub in my kit.

@elangoas My Yamaha receiver is good. Its a 6.1. I thought I'll upgrade to newer ones which offer HDMI support. The next agenda after the speakers is to get a good stereo amp. The receiver is for future dependng upon the money I'll be left with after the amp.

Dont worry about the room size for Floor standers as you are staying in a rented house. I was in exactly in the same situation couple of years ago where I got the third bedroom for AV setup.

If Your Yamaha has preouts and if your intrests are into music buy best of the speakers so that you dont need to upgrade for a while. You can add a Stereo amp later. Dont worry about HDMI input. I feel it is not worth spending money for the sake of HDMI upgrade. I feel component video input and outputs are equally good.

Try to put money on the quality of the equipment rather than the features.

Currently I run my HT in 3.1 mode. It beats lots of 5.1's and 7.1's by miles. What I mean when I say this is get the two best speakers. They will do a good job even for theater. You can add one by one components with budget permitting.

If you want to make use of HDMI, you can buy a Quality DVD player / BD player which has HDMI Outputs so that you can connect them to the LCD Or Plasma TV if you have one.. You can always take the Coaxial/Optical Digital Out from the DVD player and plug it in the current Yamah AV receiver.. Both your needs of Audio & Video are satisfied... Juz a thought not to dispose your receiver. Because your receiver & denon 1910 seem to offer the same power ratings with the expense of 1 extra rear channel with HDMI... So suggesting why loose money for thecost of extra channel & HDMI....

Elango, thanks for the suggestion. I bought a Philips Bluray player BDP3000. But the Region code is C and at the time of purchase I was not aware of the fact that there are multo region coded players. Are there any region codeless BD players out there? And also figured out later that the USB slot won't play movies from my Seagate 1TB storage. So I've reverted back to my old Philips DVD player(coz I have tons of movies in my external HDD). So I'll sell of my Philips BD player and I'll get a good BD player and keep my Yamaha AVR. Thank you for helping me to take a decision on my AVR.

I am glad that you are retaining your Yamaha receiver..

I had an Onkyo 5.1 HTIB for 1 year, 7.1 HTIB influenced me very much, so i upgraded to it. After upgrading from 5.1 to 7.1, i realised that there are very few movies in 6.1 or 7.1 Discrete channels... Even on BD Discs it is hard to find.. May be after 5 years you can find a lot of 7.1 BD discs... Then you can upgrade which is worth. Hence the suggestion...

Ok an other suggestion for the speakers & Subwoofers.. If you have come across Sonodyne do check them out... There 3 way FS Sonus 2605 cost 24K & their best subwoofer SLF200A (23K) from the Studio Monitor series is damn good. It beats most other subs in 30K range....Also consider their dipole surronds (9k) a pair.....I am very much impressed with it...

An other option that you may want to check out is the Usher V-601 monitor speaker (its a much larger bookshelf) and the V-602 floorstander (a bit above the bugdet you mentioned). Both are front ported. Since you are in Bangalore you can check this out at our showroom in Fraser town

Its really make sense now not tot upgrade fro the time being. And I'll defenitely go and audition the Sonodynes. I have a DefTech ProSub 200TL. So the subs are taken care of.

for this room size you'll have a lot of 'boom' if you put in floorstanders. the bass will be too overpowering. the other thing to take into consideration is what is your future plan. what sort of system do you want to have. surround sound or a stereo setup. what do you want to use it more for. movies or music. if its more for movies then you still dont need floorstanders if youre planning to add a sub to the setup. if its more for music then floorstanders are generally better, but not at your budget. for example take a listen to the monitor audio silver series bookshelves ma rx2 over the monitor audio bronze floorstanders ma br5. both in a similar price range. the bookshelves will score any day over the bronze floorstanders. and you definitely wont find bass lacking

Let me tell you what I have right now. I have a LCD Sony 40" Z series, a Yamaha AV receiver RX-V730, Yamaha centre and rears, DefTech ProSub 200TL, Philips BDP3000.
Music as a rule should be listened to in complete isolation. So I had to get a separate place for that. Since my wife and me, we both want to watch different programs at the same time I've decided to have my own separate TV. Thats when she gave me the small bedroom(by the way its 15x14) to set my stuff up. So I've given her the 40" LCD and will be setting up a soundbar for her and planning to get a 55" LED(or plasma, which I'll post a separate discussion). In the current set up the only thing thats bad is the 2 main front speakers.
I'll give a 60/40 emphasis for music and movies. I would like to have a good stereo set up which can also play my current yamaha surround set up. And when I'm getting a set up done I want it to be future proof to a certain extend. So thats the story.

if youre having two separate systems imo you should go for one surround sound and the other stereo. you havent mentioned what fronts youre using currently. if i were you i would have the surround sound around your current yamaha set up. and buy a stereo set up as your new system. for everyday tv etc you can use the stereo set up (which will be 'your' system') and if theres a movie or something you'd like to watch you can use your wifes system. so right now you'd need a stereo amp and a pair of speakers. depending on your budget we can recommend
