Hi friends,
My search to upgrade for a new pair of speakers has finally come to an end. Being a newbie to this separates hi-fi I bought an used Harman Kardon HK 970 stereo amp and a pair of new Mission M32i speakers as a starter system. I felt it was OK but the bass was less. One day I went to a hi-fi store to pick up the Yamaha CD-S 700 cd player and I listened to Dali Ikon 6 and it stuck in my mind something was missing in my setup. I soon upgraded the amp to a NAD c356bee reading the reviews of the warmth character. But the improvement was very less.
I came to a conclusion the floorstander is the best to my music taste. But going through the abhi_jolly's post about his set-up where he mentioned he wanted "Deep, tight, punchy bass with vocals like singer is singing standing next before me, and treble should be smooth only, not sparky at all. I hate boomy bass". Soon I felt this is what I'm looking for and he is happy with a bookshelf speaker. Having a quick chat with abhi_jolly he suggested the PSB's and as the discussion went on he suggested the Monitor Audio's, Q Acoustic's and Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 2.
The NAD is designed to work well and tested with PSB's and I'm sure it would work well. The PSB Imagine B series is available in UK for 550 which is about 20% cheaper than the US price. I almost decided on ordering the PSB Imagine B but backed off seeing the statement in the
description on the sellers website "They work great on their own in a high-performance two-channel system, or you can add one of PSB's HD subwoofers for even better bass." After all I was under the impression my set-up lacked bass and hence I'm feeling something was missing which was not correct.
No offence to PSB owners. Its just my assumption based on 5-1/4" bass/midrange driver, purely looking the specs and that description on that sellers website.
Then I found Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 2 50% cheaper than PSB Imagine B and 25% cheaper than B&W 685.
I soon ordered the Mezzo 2's. No audition but can return them in 7 working days if I'm not happy for a full refund. I received the speakers the next day and connected them. I felt the treble to be high. I ran the set-up placing one facing other with one speaker wired out of phase for 24 hours with shorth breaks every 5 - 6 hours with moderate volume. The manual suggested to run-in them like that for 36+ hours.
I connected the Mezzo 2's to speaker terminals A of my amp and Mission M32i to B terminals and switching the pairs often here are my observations in past 4 -5 days of usage with close to 50 hours on it.
High Frequencies: Though Mezzo's having a metal dome tweeter and Missions having a soft dome tweeter the Missions felt harsh and brighter than Mezzos.
Mid Range : The Missions felt more forward sounding. The Mezzo's sounded slightly laid-back with a greater resolution, more focussed and better dynamics.
Bass/Low Frequencies: Lack of placement options in my room the Missions sounded boomy. The sound felt like as if it is comming from a cave/tunnel. The Mezzo's the bass sounded deeper and tighter without any boominess.
To compliment the Mezzo's I bought a pair of stands which were official accessory for Mission 79 series speakers. The stands suited Mezzo's well as both speakers have curved cabinet.
Overall the improvement is drastic though the NAD and Mordaunt-Short is an unusual combination. The speaker cabinets feel solid and look like they are made of real wood. I'm happy with the outcome.:licklips:
Thanks to HFV for bearing me answering my questions patiently.:clapping:
Here are the pics.
I like the chrome feet on those stands. They have a nice Mission logo too on bottom plate. Spike adjustment is a breeze to do.
