Hi all,

My new setup is almost there, except for the speakers.

My setup is - Technics 1200 MK2 + Ortofon proS cart +Ortofon OM20 stylus + Rega Brio R integrated

I am back in Bangalore soon and will start looking for a pair of FS speakers. I have an allotted budget of 30 to 40K for them. I have not auditioned any speakers yet, though I have heard the Tannoy Mercury V4s and think they sound good and they fall right at the bottom end of my budget. I listen to classic rock, easy, retro and western classical mainly, so tight bass and transparent mids sought.

Any speaker suggestions please? Please could you send me some contacts and addresses as I have been out of India for 6 years now and have no idea of the new stores.

Thanks

For Tannoys I guess you could wait for an audition of V4is which would be available next week at the htstore JP Nagar. I think since they are about 400 pounds in the UK they would come up to about 50k or slightly more I believe.

They can also be auditioned at Music Ranch Jayangar and AV Integration Distribution Indiranagar.

Music Ranch

I found the folks at Music Ranch a little more polite and conversation friendly.. not sure if they have Tannoys for auditioning. The V4s are there for audition though at HTS but the last time it was connected to a Denon 2113 and a Velo impact sub I felt something was missing. It sounded all muddy. Think something's wrong with the combination. Not sure of AVID.

I will wait for the V4is, though it is a bit over my budget. ANy thoughts on the Qacoustics 2050i, they have some good reviews?

I know that MUsic Ranch are decent to interact with, there are some really snobbish showrooms and dealers out there. I'd rather not bother about the discount if instead i get good, friendly customer service.

Do you know if Bangalore showrooms and dealers entertain going with your amp for auditioning? or even better anyone offering a home audition? that would be great...

Ta!

Home audition i am not quite sure. Infact i have never requested for one. However taking your amp i think is ok with most places. I think it would be better to always and call let them know in advance instead of directly walking in with the amp. Again i never took one.

You could also look at Boston Accoustics A360 which is about 39K+ at hifimart.com. I think these are musical and if i am not mistaken a couple of members have bought them from there.
I am not sure how Wharfedales sound for rock music but you can try them out The 10.4 is slightly above budget for 44k again at hifimart.com. Auditioning at Vector Systems, HTS and Total Sound is possible i think. HTS did a Wharfedale setup when i went last time but not sure which model.

I haven't auditioned the 2050i. But i think these guys might be able to help

You could check out speakers from DALI or Usher at ARN in Frazer town. I am sure they will let you audition with your amplifier.

Thanks for that. I was told by one dealer I had called (can;t remember who) that Wharferdales / B and W / Polk are more for cinema sound than musicality.
Don't know if that is the case, but will audition them. Ta!

whats your room size. if its not too big then imo you should go with bookshelves. better sq at a given budget. brands to try out are monitor audio, kef q series. perhaps the wharfedale diamond floorstanders. you should definitely give the usher s520's a demo

Try Usher speakers as mentioned above. Or you can even look at building a full ranger speakers with markaudio alpair drivers.

Thanks guys, I will consider Usher 602. My current room size is around 200 sq ft, but am planning to move into a bigger space soon, and I just have my heart set on FSs, so I am not looking at Book shelf speakers at all.
I will be auditioning soon, and I have now increased my budget to 50K, so Tannoy V4i at 43K seems well within budget. I have heard the V4s and I liked them, so am looking forward to listening to the i's.
Finally, please let me know if you have some contacts in the speaker arena, I will appreciate it.

That is a scary prospect mate, I am a complete noob in this sphere and am not terribly inclined to spend all the time and effort which goes into customized speakers. Thanks for the tip though.

Bumping for any more suggestions... any dealers recommended, any contacts would be appreciated. Will be back and searching from the coming weekend.... Any more advice please?

epos m16i at bangalore - reference point. asking upto 60k i think but it will be worth a listen with the rega amp.

maybe spend a touch more than your budget so you get a better choice.

There is also a MA RX6 for sale on the forum but audition the sound first.

Thanks for that tip. I noticed the sale offer of the RX6. I am trying to chk the reviews and feedback online but do you have any idea of the musicality and performance of the RX6s? Are they better suited for movies rather than music? How do they rate on mids and bass? Anyone please?

RX6 - pls check if u can find a dealer in bangalore and hear it.

The M16i from Epos is a very good option too. Dont discount it w/o giving it a chance

I have the RX6 5.0 for sale. They are very good speakers for the price and have convinced me to upgrade monitor audio's platinum series as I really like their sound signature. They are slightly on the brighter side and pair very well with my warm sounding Sugden Mystro amplifier. The sound stage and imaging is decent. The bass is tight and the mids (helped by the amp) are so good that I am listening to lots of vocal music lately :). I mainly play rock (and jazz now) at low to mid volume. You can check the reviews at whathifi and stereophile.

Thank you. I am not discounting them. I will definitely listen to them next week. Just need to find out where I can audition them in Bangalore
