Greetings, All
A friend of mine gave away these to me to clear some garage space. The speaker cabinets are 2.25' x 1' x 9". These cabs are 1990 vintage but are nothing to write about, they failed the knuckle test & are made up of half inch particle board with black sunmica finish. They are sealed at the back but near the bottom of the front panel, there are two bandpass-type holes of 1" dia each. No, these are NOT ports as I can feel a foam sheet pasted across from inside.
Whats this kind of design called?
To a noob like me, it appears to be some kind of a "reverse-bandpass enclosure" ie if there is any such thing. You can see these 'holes' here.

I have posted some pics of the amp innards for you Gents to see and comment on the amp topology/design. My guess is that it'll output abt 35-40 wpc @8ohms.

Now, for the speakers, I have two choices. Either I replicate this cabinet design with 3/4" MDF/Waterproof teak Ply
OR
I junk the cabinets and retain the drivers and XOs for an open baffle desktop setup powered by the same amp. The setup ie amp, XOs and drivers remain the same but the box goes. I know it'll lack in bass but I can live with that for desktop use. I can always hook up a sub later through the sub pre-out on my Oppo DV-980H or a Classic Pioneer/Sony with a active XO module that I have.

Only thing is that the 3" tweeter will have to be placed in the center to get it to ear height. Depending on the XO pt between the woofer and the mid, this needs consideration. Please advise.

Am in the process of uploading images to Imageshack. Will try to post links and/or embed them here. Please bear with me till then.
Edit :- Here are the links to the album and images respectively. The speakers and amp are junk for most of us, I know, but I am just curious. Any inputs?

Not sure whether it is worth spending time on renovating / improving them!

I suggest you to give it away to a youngster who has genuine love for music. This will be a huge stepping stone for him / her (donno if you can find her;))

I guess so . . .
But today's youngsters have no taste for separates, this pseudo mp3 generation and that includes the fairer sex, too.

His black Merc could get him many, if he ever wishes .... right Trittya?
Don't know Avid, never thought that way, so far but there's always a 1st time, eh?:eek:hyeah:

Hmm, I doubt if those attracted to the Black Merc would find these interesting.
Bingo! So, I'll just leave these at home . . . .

I noticed the same in a pair of BPL speakers I once had. My guess is that they might be aperiodic vents. This is supposed to allow for smaller than normal cabinets in sealed enclosure designs, but I really don't know much beyond that. Dynaudio calls it Variovent and Scanspeak also sells a Flow Resistance Vent for this purpose. A shot in the dark but I think the foam stuffing could be a cheap way to accomplish the same.

If you are going to junk the cabinets, how about using it for experimentation to see if and how the sound improves, before you totally junk it? It would be an interesting experiment! You could possibly try some option to make the cabinet walls more inert - such as cross-bracing, sticking bitumen/tar sheets inside etc.
