Hi,
Quick question on HDMI being able to decode Dolby Digital Audio stream.

Below are my equipments.
1) Samsung Plasma 51 inch 4900
2) Hathway HD STB
3) Yamaha AVR

STB -> TV : HDMI connection
STB -> AVR : Optical cable.

Option 1: Set Audio on STB to PCM. No issues. Audio played through TV. Audio played thru AVR also. Just that I always get 2 channel audio. No issues, just that I miss out on 5.1 tracks for movies.

Option 2 : Set Audio on STB to Dolby Digital. PROB : No sound on TV speakers for channels which have multi track audio , namely HD channels. Audio plays through AVR , and is also 5.1 track depending on the source.

My issue : While I would prefer option 2, I would not have my AVR always used for audio. So need audio form TV as well.

I suspect on HDMI port, TV is unable to decode dolby digital tracks. Can someone confirm please. I spoke to Samsung CSR, but they did not even understand my problem , forget about resolution.

hope someone can suggest a way out or confirm if this does is not supported. I read on some forum that Samsung has got license to decode Dolby digital and that is provided in their tellys, but not sure why it is not working for me.

Thanks

IMHO tv will try to decode it to two channel streoreo , if you have coaxial port in stb connect it with avr.your problem will be solved .you will get dolby digital with these also.u can also have tv sound with your stb settings.
