Hello everyone

I am planning to buy speakers for room and require help and guidance on the same. I have not done much research till now and today the electrician told that I have to tell about the speakers by tomorrow so that he can leave the connections.

So at best I have a day or 2 to decide on what type of speakers I have to buy and which brand to buy with no prior knowledge on this stuff.

Budget- 25-30ks. Though it can be stretched to 35ks incase the setup is good.

This is the blueprint of the room

Orange part is the bed and green part is the window. Thus only place to place a tv (42/50 inch) is left at the red corner.

I went to audition JBL speakers today. Their starting 5.1 model with amp was about 30ks. but the person said that the TV must be placed in center along with speakers for good effect and with TV and speakers at corner the effect wont be achieved while the person at Sony said it is not an issue!

So my basic doubt is how less would be the effect with corner placement? Is it a dealbreaker?

Minor doubt-

I might not watch many blue ray rips. Is home theatre setup effective for normal tv viewing or watching DVD quality movie?

Usage-

I would be watching movies once a week or maybe twice a week. However what I would love to do regularly is listen slow music just like it is played in shops etc.

Now I think the same wont be achieved with 5.1 home theatre setup or is it possible? If it isnt I would be happy to spend less on the Home theatre which I wouldnt be using avidly and buy another set of speakers for listening soft music coz That I plan to do regularly. Would ceiling speakers be preferrable to achieve that effect?

Please provide your views on this issue and what combination and brand should I consider. :)

If your total budget is 25k, then try to audition the onkyo 3400, tht is the only HT that will fit in the budget apart from sony/samsung/LG etc which have limited capabilities.

You can also try to audition the Norge Amplifier and pair it with bookshelf speakers like Wharfedale 9.2/10/1, MS Aviano 1/2 and then later on 6-12 months down the line by a AVR and build on it.

Thanks. Would a pair of bookshelf speakers do the job of listening to light music at night as well?

Also how stringly would the performance be affected because of a corner viewing angle and speaker placement?

I will suggest you audition the MS Aviano 2 and Wharfedale, they are very nice, you will understand what I am talking about...:)

The angle should not make that a big difference if you position the speakers few feet away from the wall and don't stick it in the corner.

Thanks for the reply. I am in a dilemma now and much confused about what setup should I have.

Though I would like to clarify the placement is not an issue now as I wont be using a TV but would go with the Projector! Also Its not so urgent now as I have left the provision for wiring and thus can chose the speakers freely.

I really wished to audition Onkyo 3400 because of the good reviews but it seems very difficult because I guess no dealer in my city would be having its setup for Demo. Same might be the case with MS Aviano 2 and Wharfedale.

Thus I have limited options. Till now I have auditioned following models-

1.) Yamaha YHT 294 (Rs 32,000+wiring etc)- Wasnt much happy with the music output.

2.) Sony- Fail. Enough said.

3.) Harman/Kardon AVR 133 + JBL scs 200.5 Speakers (Rs 30,000)- Was very much happy with both the quality of Movies and music as compared to Yamaha or Sony. The only glitch seems to be the AVR which has limited connectivity. Then there is AVR 134 which is 2k costly but I wonder if it would go with the scs 200.5 speakers or not.

I have also read in some posts that avr 133 has limited capability but I guess it should not be an issue since I may not consider upgrading till sometime now as I am no hifi geek. But should I strongly consider avr 134 because of HDMI connection and its switching capability?

According to you which shall give better results- Connecting WD TV directly to projector, connecting via AVR or both would be same?

Then there is another dilemma after reading the below mentioned thread and one another highly appreciating philips HTIB's.

http://www.hifivision.com/home-theater/7981-philips-3571-htib-vs-onkyo-htib.html

Though I couldnt find the specific model on their website.

What would you suggest for the following usage-

Music- 50%

TV- 25%

Movies-25%

Thanks

Edit-

I have also left provision for ceiling speakers which would cost around 700/- per piece and planning to connect them to same AVR because I am hoping they would give the perfect mono sound for normal listening which I want (The one that comes from typical tape recorders or shops in malls etc). Do I need to consider about power, watt or any other factor before buying appropriate speakers to go with this AVR?

Hi,

If music will be the predominant mode of listening, I will suggest you come down on a weekend to Delhi and audition. This is an investment so better listen to them before buying, it may happen that you by something without listening and then don't like it.

My personal preference is CA550A Int Amp + MS Aviano 2 (If budget permits I will go for MS Aviano 6).

Onkyo 3400 is good for movies, I don't like it for music because the speakers crank out at higher volume especially bass.

WDTV thru AVR will upscale the input but connecting directly to the projector.

Once you listen to component setup's you will forget Philips and Sony.

In a nutshell, my suggestion is build your setup piece by piece, buy an Amp + Speakers for now and then later add Receiver and surround speakers.

Come down to Delhi with a 30-35K budget listen to the things, buy them if you like them.

I have almost zereod in on Harman Kardon AVR 133 + SCS 200.5 speakers. Though I am in doubt whether I should go for AVR 134 instead of AVR 133.

I listened some songs on this specific combo + a sample of movie and both sounded good.

Rather than getting the 200.5 u can get the newer model Cinema 300 for the same MRP 20k which has a 150 watts sub. I picked up one for 18k.

Apart from the 150 watts sub is there any difference also in the speakers? Also how does the cinema 300 perform while listening to music?

Regards

haven't listened to the speakers much, but they sound a bit bright with my yamaha receiver. bass is good. can't say about the diff between these & the 200 since I never demoed the 200.

i had a choice between the boston acoustics soundware xs 5.1 for 16.5k without bill in white colour & the JBLs. I went for JBL since these were available in black & also for the 1 year warranty.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
