Hi,

I am new to audio world and don't know much, learning slowly.

Info for you -
60%-Movies
Room Size - 10.5x10.5
Budget - 50,000 - 75,000 just for speakers (excluding sub-woofer)
Required in budget - Front Floor standing(L/R), Center, Surround pair(bipole/dipole).
AV Receiver - Pioneer VSX-1021-K
Not looking for compacts(sound quality is not so good)

So far i have got demo for
- Wharfedale 9.5 - Sounded better than Mission 9.
- Paradigm Mission 9 - Center was very clear compared to Wharfedale but whole system harsh to ears, i couldn't stand it for more than 10 mins.(e.g Bullet sound was like piercing my ears/brain :D, it wasn't soothing at all). Is it actually like that?

1. Please suggest me any brand(Specific model) better that these and that fits within my budget.
2. I have read lot about mission speakers and Monitor Audio on this forum(which model is best considering the budget).

Hi Talespin (nice handle, btw)

Is it 10.5x10.5 FEET or METERS?

I was in the same camp as you - in fact i had a speaker budget similar to yours - and wanted "Only Floorstanders" for the money.
However, if it is Feet that you're referring to, then I would reckon 110 sq. feet is too small to do justice to any decent FS, as well as your ears.

My $0.02 would be as follows:

  • Due a variety of reasons too numerous to write here, a good Bookshelf speaker set will kick the ass of a Floorstander in the same price bracket. (You should do a like-for-like comparison here, even amongst speakers from the same brand / series)
  • In order to make a good "sweet spot", you would need some space from the wall for speaker placement, as well as some space from the rear wall for your listening position. You need that much flexibility to get full value out of your kit.

Remember, what you get to experience is an alchemy of equipment, source material quality, listening environment, and - dare I say it - your own mood.

I would recommend you give a listen to Dali Lektor bookshelves as fronts and compare them to decent floorstanders in your budget.
Go with an open mind, and write back how you feel.

Cheers,

Thanks Nom.

I know its an overkill for 110 sq ft but i want to spend only once and a future proof system(Speakers). If i move back to my hometown there i have space and room where i can get acoustics done.

I have tried few good compacts but its not as good as floors.

Whardfedale and Dali in my list so far

Wharfedale - Overall they were good.

Paradigm Monitor - Bright and harsh to my taste for movies, But center was good.

Dali Lektor 6 - Fronts were too warm and soothing to ears, but center was warm but dead :(.

Need expert opinion on Dali.i was playing Gladiator war scene at beginning of movie. I could hear speech clearly from center along with other effects but it lacked energy, it was kind of too warm but clear. I guess Monitor 9 and Wharfedale centers were very good in that. Could it be due to AV settings, anybody auditioned Dali Lektor 6?
