Hiface M2tech Young DAC

Actually even the entry level CD-07 is probably comparable or better than all those dacs. Skylla is on a different planet altogether.

I wonder how spectacular your rest of chain, room and ears need to be before you can differentiate between very good and on different planet dacs/ cdps :(

Very true! I for one couldn't distinguish much between the CD-1s and the CD-2s in my chain. Though I had them at different times so I couldn't do a direct comparison, I can say with confidence that my setup is not resolving enough to distinguish between the two.

My take, having used the 1s & 2s is that the major improvement of the sound from the 2s is more refinement and smoothness with less grain, and resolution has also increased. I won't call it a day and night difference but an incremental one never-the-less and will confidently say that the law of diminishing returns kicks in significantly at this level such that I could be happy with either.
From what I understand, the real jump is to the Cd5s, which has a skylla dac and a premium transport - but unfortunately I cannot afford it.
Cheers,
Sid

i got a response from Mr Ganesh ..basically he said :
(i) that they were the distributors for Hiface so they could afford to price their products competitively since no one in the 'middle' was involved..
(ii) that the price in question was an introductory offer for the first 30 units after which it would go up by about 4K per unit
(iii)they would be releasing a dedicated power supply called PALMER for the Young DAC which would 'take the sound to another level'....
he also had this to say about their foray into hifi in India...
"My personal belief after 25 years of operating one of the most successful firms in Malaysia in audio in film is that - we need a change, we would like to bring "high-end" to the mainstream, where everyone
with a decent pay can enjoy good music without breaking the bank."...
i think this is his company if i am not mistaken...

I am not sure as simple as that and I don't go overboard because something is priced at 2 lacs

For me specwise they are miles apart, Skyla uses outdated DAC chipset, whereas other ones are on 32 bit ESS Sabre DAC(not even 24 bits)

Sweet sound probably is because of other components like capacitors and regulators and SOVTEK.

As I said without audition its difficult to buy a component.

Paper specs of the dac chip mean very little. There hundreds of things that make or break a DAC - the input stage, the digital filters, the upsampler, I/V conversion, output stage, power supply. Even the lousiest dac chip is great sounding if the ancillary circuit is well designed.

As you mentioned - the only true way of knowing how a DAC performs is by listening to it.

Ayons do not have any artificial sweetness - they have a tube output stage but are extremely neutral sounding. Since you are in bangalore, please do listen either at ARN or you are most welcome to visit my place.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
