How do I connect my dekstop to LED-backlit LCD TV to watch movies?

I wanted to check if I can connect my Desktop to my recently purchased 46" LED TV (Samsung D6000). I have lots of personal videos etc which I wanted to view on the TV without copying them to a pen drive and then connecting to the TV. I think it's possible to hook the desktop directly to the TV but will this result in loss of quality in the videos being played.

Does HDMI come into picture?

What is the difference between connecting the VGA port of the desktop PC directly to the TV compared to having HDMI cable also between the desktop PC And TV? I currently don't have HDMI port in my desktop. So I presume I need to add a graphics card.

Let us know about your PC details & graphic video out options.
Simple way is to connect D-sub to LED TV(if it has it) OR if desktop has HDMI/DVI out, you can connect to HDMI in of HDTV.

the best way to play the movies without coping in a pen drive is use of Allshare (Powered by DLNA) software provided by samsung.
I connect my samsung 40D6000 with win 7 laptop using the All share.. I just love this feature wirelessly playing the movies from laptop thru your TV..
Try it its worth it..
You can connect your Andriod phone using this DLNA feature..

else I you can conneect using a PC input cable or HDMI cable...

If you are running windows 7, then you will not be able to get FHD (1920x1080) on your TV thru the VGA cable. (Some crazy restriction by microsoft).

However, if you use vista or even XP there is no problem.

I've connected my TV to a desktop PC using a VGA cable & run XBMC without a hitch.

Hi..I got a Samsung LCD TV, a Pioneer receiver and a gateway Win 7 laptop. what all do I need to buy to stream wireless video files from laptop to TV? does it have to go via the receiver or we by pass it? and can we stream 1080P movies? Need something like Roku? pls educate me. Thx

I wonder if Andy can connect the PC and TV via lan cable and put static IP (same subset) on both devices. And then start AllShare software on PC to make TV read all shared videos. This may be cheaper than setting up using wireless dongle,wifi, etc

I think need to google more on AllShare.

I assume I would need a wireless router connected to my laptop/desktop and also I need the Samsung Wifi Adapter connected to the LED TV. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

D-Sub is VGA. I suggest you try out the wired network way I mentioned.

Well this looks a sensible thing. But the problem here is in my apartment I have everything done with internal wiring and also would prefer it that way. Now if I do invest in the Lan Cable that would mean it coming out from the bedroom to hall which may not look that good. Need to check with local cable guy if he can hook it up internally.

What is XBMC?

XMBC is nothing but an Open Source Media Player Software.
If you have Windows in your PC, you can download its latest version from the below link.
