is 4k upscaling market gimmick?

Why do you think it’s a gimmick? Are you talking about a specific brand or model?

It works really well with some brands like Sony and LG. The performance differs from brand to brand of course. Sony used to be the king, but I have noticed LG OLEDs are doing an equally good job these days.

Technically, all tvs upscale. Else you will see a small box 1080 size on a 4K tv.
But how the upscaling process is, that’s another questions altogether.
There are X1 from Sony which are wonderful in doing so.
Or the Shield or even specific Kodi boxes..
If you are after a good upscaling processor on tv, Sony is good.
Else, I would recommend upscaling outside the tv and feed a 4K signal in.

No, it's not, but the final result depends on how it's implemented and differs from vendor to vendor (Sony leads the charge though). 4K upscaling offered by Nvidia Shield Pro is a pleasure to watch.

is 4k upscaling really works on TV?r market gimmick?
It depends on the picture processors in TVs. That said, there is also some hype involved. Most TV's claim their upscaling is good. Alpha 9(LG), X1 ultimate(Sony) etc... are actually good and lives up to the hype.

Well, basically if you play a 1080p content on Shield Pro, it comes really nice on a decent 4K TV post upscaling. If the TV in question, can't display a native 4K content properly, any upscaled content will also look bad, no matter how good it was upscaled.

i hv ifalkon k71 (tcl p715) 4k,hdr 10,10plus support ,evry one on this thread recommend sony x1,nvidia .i think Nvidia supports 4k upscaling only on online streaming ,what about DTH channels ?should i buy sony x1 TVs or any others

If DTH (HD channels, 1080i) is your primary source of content, then any top/mid-tier Tv from Big 3 should do the trick. That said, 430i contents come really bad on a 4K tv no matter which TV you opt for.

Sure, let me go through the thread.
Not sure about TVs but in my nvidia shield it works and does add definition
Completely agree. The shield and shield pro 2019 have much better upscaling than any TV out there.
Upscaling certainly makes a difference but is not a patch on the original 4k content. That said on large screen TVs upscaling makes the standard def content looks presentable.
Agree here too. Upscaling won't make 480/576p content look like 4k, or even 720p. But it will add that little bit extra definition to jagged edges to make it look watchable.

X1 isn't really that good at upscaling. X1 ultimate is however quite decent and XR(2021) is good.
is nvidia shield upscales on low branded TVs?
Yes, it just feeds the upscaled signal to the TV. The screen doesn't really matter here.

My thoughts:

Upscaling will never look as good as native content unless it's using really advanced algorithms. Even something like MadVR which I use on NGU Sharp can barely make a good high-bitrate 1080p look like 1440p at best. And this is using the full power of an RTX 2070 Super with his proprietary algorithm which is one of the best in the industry.

Also when people say Sony/Samsung/LG has great upscaling, that only refers to their top of the line models. Budget models of any big brand have terrible processing as they cheap out on every rupee they can to cash in on that brand name margin.

The best way to get a sharper image on your TV is to feed it a better signal. If you're streaming, try to watch on devices that don't have DRM restrictions and at least match the content in quality. If you're downloading content, try to get the best-encoded version available to download.

Upscaling is always a last resort when you can't get the content in any better quality, and that is the only way to increase it. It only matters if you watch a lot of DTH or low-bitrate content. And even then, not much. The different between the best TV upscaler and a mediocre one isn't very high. You can get way bigger delta by switching to better sources.

From what I've seen regarding upscaling:

MadVR > Shield 2019 >>>>> Sony flagships > LG/Samsung flagships >>>>> other TVs.

Not sure where Apple TV 4k/firestick 4k stands here. Unfortunately not many have tested their upscaling capabilities. The Apple TV 4k 2021 has a lot of grunt with the A12, so I'm sure they're using it somewhere.

The demo DVDs in the showroom contain very bright and colorful objects like Balloons, cars, etc. But it's not a parameter to judge a TV. Old school photographers use a thumb rule. They judge a picture from the skin color (Technically called skin tone) of human beings. Then see how closely it resembles to that of a real human being. The same is applicable while judging a TV too. Earlier plasma TVs were a much better choice when you take this point into account. Even after doing lots of RGB and other setting changes I cannot go nowhere near to a real skin tone in my HD LED TV. I have never auditioned a 4K TV seriously. So consider this point if you feel it's criteria. Best of luck.

is madvr works with TV

so pc is require for madvr, i think Nvidia shield is better option
Depends on your use case. I already have a PC in my bedroom, so I'll just connect a long HDMI cable to my TV when I move the U79 there and get a better living room TV. No extra cost required.

My PC is also my Plex server, media server (I have 30 TB storage in parity which will require a NAS), workstation for WFH and obviously my PC for general purpose to use on free time/weekends.

Shield is a much more specialised device. Also it's not really available in India with no warranty or official availability.
