My Motherboard: Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0
Receiver: Yamaha HTR 2064
Codec: Realtek ALC 892
Port: Optical

Asus promotes this board having 8.1 ch capability, what I am confused is it possible to achieve 5.1 over optical port and if yes how? Because I am not able to achieve it. :/

Optical port supports DD and DTS 5.1. Set your media player to use the optical out and enable bitstreaming of DD and DTS. Try the latest XBMC Gotham. Audio settings is very easy to make. Also try potplayer.

yes you can. connect from optical/digital out of motherboard to optical in of AVR through tosslink/optical cable. And then select 'digital out' in your PC's sound setting.
