Linn Studio Masters download for free

This has been discussed/mentioned several times on the forum, even on this very thread (post 40 by the venerable Thad). It is definitely interesting. Only folks with highly resolving systems (and ears too :D) will really be able to tell whether it is hocus-pocus or not.
Some threads:

You just need to search for "xiph".

Good to see more and more people are trying to see if it actually does make sense.
Am reminded of the interesting thread on the "Golden" ears.

Very good site, more so because it is both free and legal. I downloaded a couple of albums in FLAC, been listening to "Magnitudes of Order" by Globular. I am new at this genre - all I can say is that I'm amazed by this album, really amazing on my galaxy S3 and Senn in-ears!

I have managed to upload most of my collections of the Linn Christmas/New Year downloads.

However, the sad news is that it is not letting me upload any more from my collection. Especially King's Consort and Winter ... has failed. I have tried at least 50 times to upload it with no success. Same is the problem with the Nine Inch Nails collections.

My guess is the MEGA site is slow to upload as well as my super duper fast ISP (BSNL) is to blame.

Any ideas as to how to get it done is most welcome. In the meanwhile I will open up the existing collection for our FMs benefit.

With the hope that all the links work. I am also open to giving my MEGA Id for anyone to upload more legal downloads to my ID for the benefit for all our members.

If 16 bits is sufficient, it is sufficien

your post led me to read up more on this 24 bit hi res thing

24bit vs 16bit, the myth exploded!

However, this is unlikely to happen in the real world as no DACs on the market can output the 144dB dynamic range of 24bit (so they are not true 24bit converters), almost no one has a speaker system capable of 144dB dynamic range and as said before, around 60dB is the most dynamic range you will find on a commercial recording

interesting!

It appears to be megaupload reincarnation. How is the download speed with mega. Can we pause/resume? Will give it a try tonight. Thanks for the links.

Guys,

I will be deleting the Dropbox links after one week.

Please download if anyone still needs to grab them.

Thanks!

The Sound Liaison company also gives away a couple files.

I am a very big fan of the recording quality of this little label.
Highly Recommended.

I downloaded some 16/44.1 versions of HD tracks and other 24/192 bit recordings that had been converted to redbook formats. What I find is that all these recordings "made to impress" are made in acoustically dead studio environment with close miking no ambiance or resonances or atmosphere from any venue. A TOTAL waste - only a fool and moron is impressed by such tailor made recordings. Thank goodness I didnt invest in a 24/192 dac yet and blow up my money on these HiRez tracks. I only hope the bulk of paid 24 bit HD tracks are not at all like these.

A common example is the B&W audiophile CD with Alan Taylor etc. These kind of recordings are made for people who listen to their gear not the music.

You mean to say that you ONLY buy CDs of Live Events ?

90% or more of ALL CDs sold are studio recordings....

Anyways, to each their own ...

No, I mean to say these hd mastered sample tracks were particularly dead in that aspect of quality. I have lots of redbook cd's that are studio mastered that do not come across like these ones when played. It isn't just about a blacker background when played. I guess maybe these tracks were not miked for capturing ambient energy with extra mikes at a distance near the ceiling etc... the end result was clinically good, but a disaster when it came to communicating the energy across.

I agree. Its true for many of these reference disk. most of them anyway contain music i personally dont care much about as well ! but these are good to tune your system on those full moon nights that "gear madness" sets in.

Ain't that the story with all audiophiles?

But its commercialization and marketing to blame here... not necessarily audiophiles or music lovers... we just have to have the latest, the greatest, and the next big thing.

I suspect you are referring to "Close Miked" recordings.

Such recordings better bring out the textures and nuances in the voice, and provide a greater immediacy. They are best when used for a single singer, and simple musical arrangements.

Yes all the texture is there but no atmosphere! The immediacy feels fake and phony as a result. Now I am curious and would like to know from the 24 bit owner camp - what percentage of HD tracks you have downloaded are like this?

I assume the older tape masters of concerts digitized to 24bits should be safe. Its the new recordings on 24bit gear we need to watch out for. I have a redbook cd of carnatic where the "ambience miking" was advertized on the cover.

gooble,
You have ventilated your view, and I have ventilated my view.

We all appreciate different things in life.... including music.

Personal tastes vary. All are valid.

Try to put down another view and propound your perspective is not only futile, but unnecessarily aggravating.

Ok it wasnt meant to be personal... more like "What a waste of hi-fidelity effort!" (Slaps forehead).

Cheers

I remember reading a discussion (I think on Pink Fish Media) where it was mentioned that many of the HDTracks tracks have a low dynamic range factor. It seems that in some cases the 24/96 versions actually have a lesser dynamic range than the 16/44.1 CD versions! There was also a theory ("conspiracy" or not, I'm not sure) being mooted that HDTracks are purposely not publishing the dynamic range values of the downloads for this reason, even though there has been substantial pressure from customers.

So, perhaps the problem lies in the dynamic range of their downloads and not in the bit depth/resolution.

I can't find the link to that discussion, and I know very little about the technical aspects, so this is an idea I'm putting out hoping for more information.

Personally, I've found some of the HDTracks downloads to be particularly good, and some of them ordinary. Linn seems to be more consistent in quality.

I have a 24/96 HDtracks FLAC set of Charlie Haden's "The Private Collection" (a live recording in a club, going by the clinking of cutlery and the enthusiastic audience), and going by my experience with other HiRes tracks, this album is outstanding in terms of depth, blackest of black backgrounds, recording, everything. The first time I listened to it, I went wide-eyed and slack-jawed within seconds of starting to play it. The excellent music also helps, of course, and whenever I've started listening to this 2-CD sized album, I've not been able to stop playing it or change the tracks till I finish all of it. With it playing, I can spend time enjoying the music, and also enjoying the activity of listening/seeing my setup reproducing the music in a stellar manner, the second thing being a rare exercise for me.

Great, I am going to buy that one and downsize it to 16/44.1 using FIR algorithm with some opensource tools. I need some stuff like this as a benchmark but something thats also enjoyable.
