Hey All,

I'm in the market for a 12" Subwoofer primarily for listening to music (genres include classic rock, prog rock and some fusion). I'm aiming for tight, accurate bass rather than a boomy or overpowering low end. This will be part of a 2.1 setup.

My setup:
Room: 300 sq ft
Budget: 50 - 90k
Receiver: Onkyo RZXX
Music/ Movies: 80/20%
Sealed/ Ported: Leaning towards sealed

I'd appreciate any recommendations/ brands/ models this fabulous community had good experiences with. Would also be happy to hear about must avoid options.

Thanks in advance!

definitely ignore ported subwoofers which have more spl in low end and lack spl in midbass. Sealed is your answer. what is your room length and width

Thank you for your response and for the sealed recommendation. Room is about 23 X 14 feet.
Try to look for sunfire hrs-10, though discontinued, an amazing subwoofer for the money if you can manage to find stocks remaining with dealers. after disc should be a little above your budget but well worth the money.

DO NOT buy it from Vplak. They don't have it(yet they have listed it).

Go for SVS SB1000 or SB2000 they work well for music. I have been using the SB1000 for almost 5 years now with Marantz AVR (SR6015) primarily for music and also movies. Excellent output and punch for music (2.1) and movies(7.1). I use the same in a 200 sq feet room.

SVS offers 5 years unconditional warranty if purchased from their authorised dealers in India.

Audition where possible before taking a final call on the sub. Possibly the SB2000 should be more than sufficient. If you have space and can increase budget, get 2 SB1000s. and place them appropriately (2.2) .

The SB1000 pro is the latest model where you can make adjustments using the APP on your mobile. If you are not going to keep adjusting the sub settings all the time, you should go for the SB1000 / 2000 (not pro) which will cost less and some dealers may also rope in good discounts. In order to get full and proper warranty, ensure you purchase from Authorised SVS sellers who provide GST bill with 5 years unconditional warranty.

All the best!

Sb 1000 pro will give that spl in low end 20hz? X2 just like ported does? For movies

I used ported subs in the past like JBL, Boston, BIC America (H100ii & PL 200) and the SVS was much better in performance and avoided the extra rumble / Boominess.

Bass Management - LFE Cross Over is at 110hz. I didn't measure if the sub can indeed reach 22hz or less, possibly a measuring device can show this (if needed) but if it pleases / surpasses past experience then it's definitely good which worked in my case.

My Front Speakers are kept at SMALL and their Crossover setting is kept at 60hz. (Bose 301 Series V) They have mini rear end ports for bass to push out if any. While not all Bose products are great but some of their passive speakers are really good and can still handle well the movie content and music we hear today.

After Audyssey Setup, instead of REFERENCE kept the same on FLAT. This has worked for me all these years as it does better justice to the sources I play from.

I kept toying with the AVR settings including Cross Over for months till I was able to find the best sound: be it loud or very soft when watching movies / hearing music at 2am.

It also depends on one's choice of music choices, sources and listening preferences. A sub is meant to provide the punch and also compensate for the frequencies which Front Speakers and others are not able to handle and emit out as part of the listening experience. There are some who would want the room vibrating with bass (like a club).

i recently sold pb 2000 pro it was very bad for music cds of 90s like gupt, akele hum akele tum. Bass was either bad or missing. You need minidsp umik1 and room eq wizard to properly setup your subwoofer. With audeseey u can select frequency only like 40 60 80 100 etc but with dirac you can see where speakers have most energy or SLP then can crossover at that point so that THERE IS SMOOTH TRANSITION OF BASS from speakers to subwoofer and also bass is non directional and must feel coming from front speakers irrespective of where subwoofer is placed. I will go with sb 1000 pro x 2 this time my room is only 13 feetx11feet

I used to be an Active DJ in the 90s since College days (over 2 decades back) and so was heavily into Electronics n gears for professional shows etc. Venues (Indoor / Outdoor) was always different and so setting different speakers with / without active crossover was an important step to ensure quality sound flows to the audience / crowd then of course DJ skills with the right music.

I trust my judgement by ear given the experience and that's how i do my adjustments at home to make it as good as possible.

A good call to go for Sealed Subs if you are more into music. Some have tried 2 subs (one sealed and one ported) just as not to miss out on bass experience. Although the Marantz has 2 sub connections with individual adjustments (part of audyssey setup). I simply don't have the space to put one more sub. I love the SB1000 due to its monster performance and its tiny size (13 x 13 x 14 inches).

so sb 1000 pro x 2 will fill my room with bass for movies as well? 13x11feet
