Magnepan LRS

I have heard the Magnepans are very finicky with placement and almost need to be 3 feet into the room (away from the back walls) . is that true?
Also, are they any good for HT duties? Do they integrate well with only their Sub ?

TYIA, just curious..
They do work for HT duties as well, but nothing really great as such. Even after Routing it via Crown Xls 2502 the Audessey sets Maggie levels at +13db to Compensate for lack of loudness probably. Also the Dolby being spatial Sound distribution, dipoles don't do a good job as fronts and all moving effects are bit subdued. A 5.1 with all Maggie may be a different ball game altogether.
They really shine In a 2.1 setup, be it music or movies!!

Also it would be prudent to wait for some US-India Free trade deal to escape duties or reduced duties..
Highly doubtful of such a thing happening, only exports sector will benefit our economy and not the imports. But if such a deal is struck, many of us will be ready to pull out our wallets asap :)

I am in no hurry my friend.. Speakers and electronics made in the US is a very small industry and may be allowed by India under the FTA.. Electronics in a China India FTA would be a huge no no from our side... Even lesser duties would help me in buying but not right now with the USD at an all time high

I still have the Maggies on my mind but waiting for the US Dollar to come down as it has increased the total cost by appreciating 10%... Also it would be prudent to wait for some US-India Free trade deal to escape duties or reduced duties.. I am assuming all of us have main speakers and can wait to indulge in a secondary pair of speakers...
Count me in too, I m looking for Magnepan speakers new or used. I had 1.7i but they stopped working since 1 month..

Count me in too, mate. Although I am presuming we are discussing Maggie LRS here, yes?

How would these work in a home theatre environment? All front stage (LCR)

I don't feel the Maggie's will do great for the money for the front stage in a HT environment. They need extremely high and cleaner power to drive and they need a lot of space to perform its best. For movies, speakers needs to be extremely dynamic. But, Maggie's aren't meant for that.

I've not heard the Maggie's personally. These are the thoughts from the international reviewers and Maggie owners...

Magnepan do have on wall speaker panels as well for home theatre and if you plan to use a couple of subs, surely they will play the mids and highs cleanly if the on wall works as advertised...

Maggies are very agile and dynamic compared to box speakers. The entire panel is ribbon.
They just have to be setup correctly and coupled with the room precisely (like mm accurate)
And they need solid amplification and a big enough room to play with.

I have heard Maggies only at demo rooms, where a lot of work has gone into placement and tuning.
Home use may result in some compromises in room coupling, but not agility and dynamics.
Cheers,
Raghu

IMO, the biggest drawback of maggies is very narrow sweetspot. I demo'ed them in 2012, at least that was the case with the demo room I listened in.

But at the sweet spot, none of the boxes I demo'ed could beat them. I demo'ed speakers which cost multiples of maggies price.

+1 fussy with placements. But, should certainly reward the listeners who want transparency.

Got to know today that Magnepan has a new India distributor:

Had a word with the owner, Utsav and he came across as a passionate audiophile.. He does have a couple of LRS models in the current shipment but tried to dissuade me on the LRS as Magnepan is not very keen to offer good prices for the Indian market.. However he has .7i 1.7i, 3.7i on demo in Kolkata.. Do check his website and PM me if keen on a group buy for the 1.7i..

I am in the market for Magnepan 0.7 or 1.7 - I am a serious buyer and will be placing my order in a couple fo weeks. Audio Vision link below has prices for India, Local dealer here in Hyderabad - Vector systems will offer at the same price I am sure. Want to see if it's possible to buy it cheaper, and have a listen if possible before purchase. Mark up from US prices is a very significant 35%. Already have a solid home theater at home, so I was looking for some very good musical and unique speaker for stereo listening. Other speakers I was looking at are Martin Logan ESLs and Golden Ear Triton 2+.

I am in the market for Magnepan LRS speakers at a reasonable price if available in Mumbai. Audio Vision's price list does not have LRS.

Audiovision is no longer the distributor for India sir as stated in my previous post.
Yap, think they are going out of business. But Vector in Hyderabad still is I believe. Do let me know if you can get to know the prices for the 0.7 and 1.7 in India. The Golden Ear speakers from Audio Vision are priced exactly as Vector so I was thinking the prices will be there same for these too.

I got in touch with the distributor. The prices are better than the previous distributor, but still on the high side. We would be paying about 50-60 K over and above the US list price. Anyway I am definitely ordering one soon rather than later.
