Matching Harman Kardon 133

Hello,
MY friend got hold of new Harman Kardon AVR 133 and connected JBL STS 200 book shelves speakers to it.
The problem is the sound distorts at higher volumes
Can anybody guide how to come out of it ?
Does AVR 133 go with only floor standers?

I have heard the Harman Kardon 133 and its sound quality is not good enough to bear the HK badge IMHO. It sounded very brittle and harsh compared to even the AVR 147 model which i demoed.
