Hi, friends,

I want to make a two channel music set up for which i have finalised
Emotiva pre power combo ( UPA-1 + XPA-2) along with their CDP model
ERC-1. This set of 3 will cost me around $ 1600 in the US. I have a
cousin in the US who travels to India almost 10 times in a year. He
can bring them one by one with his luggage. Now the big question is
which speakers to pair them with. I need a musical pair of FS which
matched well with the emotiva setup. My budget is not more than 80-
100 K.They should be VFM and i don't mind pre-owned. I know there are hundred and one choice available but audition will be problem as carrying the amps & CDP to various dealers/shps will be a problem as
they are too heavy. It will take around 4/5 months to get all three
of them here in Kolkata. In the mean time i want to narrow down my
choice of speakers to around 5 or 6. I already have MS -906i FS for
my HT set up paired with Pioneer AVR 1017 but i think 906i will be a
misfit with the emotiva team. It will be like fitting a bicycle tyre
to a Harley. My listning room size is 20' x 30'. I listn to all kind
of music including hindi. Please give your suggestions about apeakers.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rajneesh

Why don't you check up the DIY speaker made by Suman Jana using scanspeak drivers which he has named rediscovery towers. IIRC, he said it would cost something like 65k.

If properly implemented, speakers with scanspeak drivers sound like heaven.

+1 Rajesh's suggestion. While many may not have the desire to do a diy speaker system, let me assure you that not only are there plenty of such designs available on the net, but they also offer the best bang for the buck. I have done four of them so far with no regrets whatsoever.

rpugalia, I would also second Cap'n suggestion. Check out the Scanspeak based speakers by Suman Jana. Scanspeak drivers are simply awesome and if well implemented you will have speaker you wont have to upgrade!

Yes indeed-I have one of those awesome Scanspeak designs sitting in my bedroom and am listening to it as I send this message out. IN the nearly 10 years I have had this system, I have never felt the need to upgrade. In addition to Scanspeaks, systems using Focal as well as Seas Excel drivers are also good.

Though undoubtedly scanspeak speakers are superb, the reason that I recommended to OP is that he is in the same city as Suman and can easily listen to them.

hi rajneesh

why do you want to pair a mono block (UPA-1) with a 2 channel amp (XPA-2)
i guess it shud be USP-1 (pre) with XPA-2

do try the MS mezzo 8 with the Xpa-2 shud be a good match

OT - can someone pls loan an emmotiva power amp for me to pair with my smg and decide?
IIRC someone is about to import emotiva in India with local support. Was it audire?

Rajneesh

Since you are spending $$ and time, you need to do some shortlisting of systems by auditioning them in the next 3-4 months. In my view this is time well spent. I strongly believe in synergy-I have by trial and error matched different speakers to different amps in my house and am of the view that ALL speakers will not match ALL amps( or should I say all speakers that look good on paper?). So why not do some auditioning now, since you are waiting for the gear to reach, and then do the final auditioning with your gear connected?

Believe me, it will be worth it.

Thanks Subhash for pointing the mistake. It was a typing error, it is indeed
the USP-1 ( pre amp) . Somehow i am unable to edit the original post.
As for the speakers, I have heard the MS mezzo 6 but not the mezzo 8.
I want something in the league of MS performance 6 or above. The sound
should be heavenly. As said earlier i might go for pre owned if new speakers are out of my budget. I will definitely audition a lot of speakers before taking the plunge. And i have a good 4-5 months of time to do so. The final decision
will be only after pairing the speakers with the amplifiers.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
