Movies Now HD-ch from Times

This is some good news. Now Star will speed up their launch of Star Movies HD to compete with Movies Now. Hopefully they carry Movies now as well.

What I don't understand is when 'permission to uplink/downlink' applications for numerous channels such as 'ESPN HD', 'History HD' etc. have been pending with the government for over a year, how has 'Movies NOW' gotten permission. As for 'Star Movies HD', there is nothing Star can do to speed it up, their application is pending for a while too.

Is it necessary to telecast a movie in HD, a BluRay title of that film must exist? I mean old movies also will be shown in HD?

No, it is not neccessary for a blu-ray of a title to exist, for it to be broadcast in HD. Since all movies shot on film, have a higher resolution than blu-ray (1920 x 1080), all that is required to broadcast them in HD is for a a HD transfer (film to digital) to exist. There are lots of movie that have digital HD masters available but have not been released on blu-ray.

Sanjay,

I don't think these are pending with Government, (unless you have any other reliable source which please quote). Because, these are pending for business deals and will be launched as and when the studio companies feel that they will have good advertising revenue and will not have other complications like carriage fee, distribution through cable etc.. I don't think Government is holding up any approval.

I am sure it is going to be upscaled DVD movies mostly..

So what!! There will be movies in real HD in plenty. Also, the sound will be in 5.1. Presently, the sound in English GEC sucks (except BBC Entertainment and FX - which are only in stereo).

I am sorry to say but you are wrong. As per the governments own figures, there are over 400 channels waiting for government aproval for over a year now. In fact according to the last public statement, the government had put a moratorium on approvals for new channels. How long the moratorium will be is unclear. By the way quite a few of the foreign HD channels have been beaming over Asia for a while now and therefore offering these channels to DTH companies, like Discovery HD & NG HD, would not even entail additional costs.

I am sorry to say that you are wrong. The so called "400 plus" number of channels awaiting the approval were filed only in the last month when government was thinking of this moratorium as channels wanted to put in as many applications as possible when they had the permission.

Also, Government has stopped accepting new channels because (a) already many channels have not started broadcasting inspite of long back received permission and (b) total number of channels permitted by the government has well exceeded 1000 and there is no bandwidth in any media for this.

Sounds rather stupid and illogical, if you ask me. How does it matter to the government if a channel has actually started to broadcast or not. It's not like it costs the governement in any way or that the channels are taking up or blocking any resources. I think you have your facts mixed up a bit here. DTH is not like the cellular situation where the governement allocates a particular frequency bandwith and therefore if not used it is wasted. There is no such frequency or bandwith limit vis a vis DTH. The only limitation may be availability of transponders on communication sattelites, which in any case is the channels problem not the governement's.
