My DIY Speaker Cable !

Shreekanth, I have all her 8 albums, plus a recently picked up "best of" collection.

Particleman, Clannad is very good, cant find any new albums these days; though I heard a collection is out recently. Nice to know more people interested in Celtic/irish music.

Some similar artists I like are Kitaro, Maire (Moya) Brennan, Celtic Women, David Arkenstone, Vengelis, Secret Garden etc. to name a few.

I used to listen to Celtic music in the 90s but not much anymore - it was a phase for me. I also used to listen to Van Morrison (Moondance, No Guru..., etc.), Shooglenifty, and some small bands that I can't recall anymore. I still listen to Chieftains now - their Spanish influenced "Santiago" with Los Lobos, et al, is a brilliant album.

Hi,
Buy her "Paint the sky with stars" which are her greatest hits and see if u like the music. If u do like it then start buying her albums which are easily available at least in mumbai.
Actually i heard a song of hers orinoco flow in an assorted compilation and had really liked it a decade or m ore ago. Some lovely tracks.
Regards

This is a good suggestion, especially if they have remastered the tracks. I played Watermark for the first time in years yesterday and found it was lacking (1988 - can't blame them).

Boss i am not an engineer so cant comment on the inductance and all...

But, yes, as the cable you stuffed for ur frnd, is working fine...right...???

So y not insert some reports of the changes and development of AQ with your DIY stuff...

I am eager for the same...

Hi,

No need to bother ;)!! These are few things I wanted to show so put it (just to make sure that its not Hoax) !!

I think I've already told that we played some CDs and what was difference in sound before and after this cable !!.

If you want some thing else then please do let me know so that I can post it immediately !

Have sent My contact Info through PM so please do the needful !

Regards.

Hi,

Great !! so whats your take on her ?? I liked it ( to be frank that was the first time I heard her)

Glad to know that you've heard all of her works !! have seen her DVD aswell ? Am planning to buy it but nowhere its available !!

Regards.

Glad to hear some discussion on one of the most profound celtic artistes around.

Enya is simply class apart, what with tracks like
A Day Without Rain
Wild Child
Orinoco Flow
Sail Away (Included in Pure Moods as well)
May it be (from LoR)
Only Time
and many many more

Rather than "Paint the.." i'd recommend "A Day Without Rain" to start truly appreciating enya. A compilations typically has the "Full Album" feel missing which is usually critical in case of New age of all genres. You have to gve the whole album a chance.

Back to topic!

Sreekanth, do you think it is worth to buy cable from here for my next build?

I can get 2 x 2.5mm (twin-ax) Van Damme cable for £1.25 each meter for a 100metre drum
VDC online catalogue

Or simply get it from *you? I need at least 80 metre of cable for 7 speaker setup for my 7.1 setup

*Apologies, if you have no plans to make it publically available but It's a strong candidate mate

Hi,

Sunil sorry for the late reply ! you know why the delay !

The cable that you've opted looks good ! but I doubt that they are twisted pair !! I recommend twisted pair as they are more suited !!

Sunil I don't think you need to be that formal with me anymore :p!! I think we've way passed that stage ;) !

I have no issue in making some cables for you ! but the problem is the length ! as I cannot weave/braid a single length of 80+ meters for obvious reasons !! I think you'd know yourself this !!

But for lesser lengths Am always game ! anyway will let you know the possibilities of 80+ meters also ! have some idea cooking in my mind ;)!!

Regards.

100% true, but any major help need to be well paid off :D

That's definitely granted :), I mean the demo cables.
I have no issue in making some cables for you !

Yes sreekanth, the living room is 13x29.5. I need to setup 7.1, that means at least 2 sets (rears) need to go all way back, another 2 sets to 3/4th the length of room (surrounds) & another 3 for sound stage. Also would like to wire all the rooms with speaker cable from media hub that means at least 80 metre concealed cable is required

but the problem is the length ! as I cannot weave/braid a single length of 80+ meters for obvious reasons !! I think you'd know yourself this !!

Or shall we use twisted pair for LCR ?

Hi,

Sunil demo cable will be ready by the time you come ;)!!

as with the rest of wires, yeah the LCR can be of the twisted type but it would be better if all has same cable !! just that there should be no mismatch in the cabling thats all !!

So just check for same type for throughout ! if its not possible then I'll see whats to be done !!

let me know what do prefer to do ! or if are able to find a suitable cable !

Regards.

Hi All,

Here's one of my DIY effort at speaker cable. This is 3 meter cable as this enough for me ! Pics of the measurement taken from Phone cam Please bear it ( hadn't bought the digicam then)

The Cable is based on the twisted pair design but after lot trial and error and after lot testing with various pattern of braiding this is one which gave me the best result !

The main problem with the twisted pair cable's are the Figure of eight problem ( I think you already know this),so tried hard to avoid this by using 3 pairs of wires.

I have used 6 16 gauge pure Copper with Silver coating each capable of handling 6-8 amps of current, So the total of 36-48 Amps of current Each Cable is capable off !

Another main problem of DIY cable is the inductance and capacitance, if both are not kept at bay ! well expect some fireworks baby ! So I've managed to keep both under control..As least the Values as much better the result !
The Value's are as follows :
1) Inductance for 3 meter is 0.011 Mh
2) Capacitance for the 3 meter 10.30 Mfd

Consider this and also compare this with commercially available one's

Just to give a few examples, Kimber 4 TC is 44 pF/ft, 8 TC is 100 pF/ft, Cardas Quadlink 5C is 23 pF/ft and the Goertz starts at 500 pF/ ft and goes up from there !!

As with Inductance they are almost similar in range of .345uh /ft to .715uh/ft ( small change here and there from brand to brand)

So I think you get the idea ! any doubts or questions, you know the drill !

I've attached the pics ! so Enjoy my friends !

Regards.

Hi...
Looks like a recipe i once made by following a DIY done by sumbody called 'Scoobie-doo". Cool one though...

Hi Guys,

Here's my new speaker cable effort !! its a 16 gauge wire braided 3 into positive and 3 into negative, Unlike last time where I had braided all 6 into 1,this time I've put them separately ( to test the results) i,e 3 braided into one for + and 3 into. Am still not sure whether I'll join both or run them separately to the speaker !! still in the R&D Zone ;)

Once its done will post the results !! so far in their existing state I comapred it to the one Am using and it did make a small difference in sound,The mids opended a bit and the whole sound stage was bit more open and wide compare to the existing one (this could be right or could be wrong also as Its not properly burnt and might sound different after burning)

Anyway please checkout and give me some feedbacks ( need em badly :p)

Am unable to put the pics here for some strange reasons ( uploader pages just dies ) so here the link for the web Album

Picasa Web Albums - handsome - My New DIY Sp...

Hi Sreekanth,

Your pics in that link look to me belong to multiple wire projects.....or are they of only one project? It would be great if you post up the specific pics of this project only!!

Btw, I am planning to buy copper co-axial cable for created interconnects...I haven't abandoned the existing plan (using three wires per interconnect) but plan to experiment with that too....the wire is also used for mic also... what do you say?

Cheers!

soundsgreat,

Nice effort. Ya DIY is always fun and not to mention saves so much money!

One correction though. You cannot, repeat cannot measure impedance with a multi meter. What you measure is only resistance. Impedance is a function of frequency and cannot be measured with a multimeter - that is a DC source. Ditto for capacitance of a cable.

But your cable looks really good though. Definitely on par with the pro ones. Good job

Good stuff soundsgreat. What are your components for the cables? Also it may help others if you can post where you got these from. I usually end up getting my gear from the US or EU before a build.

Hi,

Chandan the picasa gallery is infact belonging to multiple projects ! its a mixture of my own speaker cable and with that of the cable I made for a friend !! anyways its not the cable you should be looking !! coz what you are planning to build is one in this very thread not of the pics in picasa (its basically the pics of my Anaconda) !!

As with Co-Ax cable, well quite frankly there are hardly any good cable available for IC ! the Mic cable that you are referring is NOT SUITABLE for the IC ! its not the right choice due to various facts !! Its better that you Stick with the braided Cable and use the heat shrink tube as I suggested and finish it ;)!!

Any other doubts we can always continue on the Mail (as its been done now )

Flanker Thanks for checking out my project :)!! Bout your corrections,

First of I never published or talked anything bout Impedance :p!! what I have posted is the Inductance and Capacitance of the cable ! I don't know how did you assume that I was using a Multimeter:rolleyes: ! Its not Multimeter its LC Meter(Inductance and Capacitance Meter ) where things are bit different from a regular MM ;)!!

Another thing is,the very same cable project was posted in a Canadian forum where the Owner of the forum has liked it soo much that He has done some Spice simulations based on the Values !

You can read the whole thing here and See the Simulations etc...

My DIY Speaker Cable

Hope you don't mind my clarifications on your Observations :D!!

Marsilians Thanks to you too for checking out my project !!

The Components of the cable is mentioned in the first page of this thread ! I bought it from Various sources (some of which are only Wholesale and not retail ) so thats the reason why I have not posted the address and the likes !!

Glad to know that you are also into this ! even more so to know that you are able to get things easily from UK and US !! Perhaps some time we should meet-up ! you are welcome to drop in and Audition my stuff anytime !

Regards.

ya, my mistake indeed.

The spice simulation shows very good performance of your cables. Great job !

Also never realized it was a LC meter.

Soundsgreat what's your take on CAT 5 cable? have you tried them. How do they compare to lampcord?

Hi,

Flanker its ok no probs,it does happen sometime:) !! Thanks again for appreciating my effort !!

Coming to your query, I don't recommend it for the purpose ! I have said this time & again and will repeat the same ! See first of its single stand wires and the outer sheath (the PVC Grey colour ) is not air tight so keeping the Capacitance and things is not going to be easy ! even if you strip the outer sheath and try using the inner wires almost same result !

I did try the CAT5E for speaker cable, The sound was not at all that impressive ! the mids and highs were ok but the bass had taken a major beating ! so if one is hard pressed to use,its perhaps best to use it for Bi-Wiring (for Highs ) !

Regards.

Awesome DIY SG, really loved the finish. May i know which brand of cables you used and also where you got the silver coated outer?

First of all thanks for the comments Ram !!

Seems you've very busy digging up old threads, first suri's now this year old one of mine:lol: !! There should be better things in the US for you to drool (a Certain Vegas Casino with @#$#* ;) ) then...............

Jokes apart, any particular reason you digging bout cables ? plan to get some cables from the US or what ?

Ram I've already mentioned the the details you've in earlier posts please if you don't mind refer to them ;)!

I didn't get the last part of your question,What you mean by Silver Coated Outer ??

Regards.

LOL, there were few threads I had marked for reading but never got to reading them. So found little free time so started reading them. No more cables for me, I bought Belden 5000 which will last this lifetime for me :)

I was asking about the silver coated jacket kind of thing on the wires!

P.S:More than Certain Vegas Casino certain Cervin Vega's make me drool
