Hello Gurus,
I am on lookout for horn or open baffle speakers.

Why?
-I am looking for non "boxy" sound.
-I have heard they can reproduce live music well.

Characteristics I am looking for:
-sound should be open
-Excellent sound stage and imaging
-balanced sound (just right proportion of highs mids and lows)

Too much to ask for I know. :) Hence these two designs as recommended by some senior music lovers.

Now the difficult part to get this is in a budget! I dont have any specific budget in mind right now but the lower the better. [something around 40-50k a distant dream??? :( Hence open to options like pre-owned or DIY]
I am very tight on budget these days due to added family responsibilities.
I am open for pre-owned or even DIY speakers as far as they solve the purpose and my budget constraints.

Please share you Gyan...

Amen..

I think OBs has the best VFM to say least about it. It takes space though at the time of listening.
You can see this link OB - Open Baffle speakersjust to feel more comfortable about making one of your own. For the easiest way, you can make OB like the one made by Doc Jaudere. Mine one is easier and probably cheaper too. Follow our posts.

PM me for any further information.

I have very limited idea on horn design yet think it is costlier to make than an OB.

Also try the JTR NOESIS. These are some of the best speakers, both for music and HT. They need very little amplification to sing very loudly and clearly. But you have to import them directly from US. Mind it, these speakers need a subwoofer to go below 65hz.

You can't gp wrong on Fostex 8 inch drivers in aback loaded horn. The only hitch is that you will have to get it made yourself after importing the drivers-it should easily meet your budget.

Just for my reference has anyone tried it before any link?

I have built a BLH with Fostex FE206En. Imported the drivers from Madisound and got carpenters help to build the speaker. The design is the stock one for the speaker available in the Madisound site.

Picking up on this thread.

George, would this be suitable for room size 10x12 with listening distance of 6-7 feet, or an overkill.

Sorry if I could not find it even after searching the forum, but is there any build thread of this already?

BTW did you get a chance to compare with the other drivers like 126en in FE series?

Also do let me know if horn loaded would be a good option or should any other design be also considered?

(music listening: almost everything except hard rock. Prefer clean/detailed sound that is lively in nature)

Thanks in advance!

@Rohit,

I am going to start my Frugel-Horn Mk3 with FE126EN, if you are interested i can make the cabinet for you. I have already got the drivers, so you need to import the drivers.

Thanks,
Bibin

OB - look at Hawthorne Audio or Eminence for the bass which you can mate to a Supravox, B&C, etc. wide range.

Horn - look at Lowther. Martin Audio in Singapore is the closest place you can audition them.

My room size dictates the choice of design. Since room is smaller 10x12 I have been asked to avoid OB.

Horns - actually look promising for kind of sound I am looking for (live-ly).

Recently I am seeing good initiatives been taken by DIY members in the horn loaded designs which is a good thing.

I am very surprised to see that horn designs promise so much but lacks the exposure/education on our forum! Happy to see things picking up :)

BTW does any one in Pune have a horn loaded speaker?

if i am not wrong

Nice to know JBL has some horn loaded designs. Also seem to have some bookshelves. They seem to be on the pricier side though. Most horn designs are expensive.

Hence DIY/pre-owned way seems appropriate at the moment. Just in case if anyone comes across someone letting go of horn speakers do keep my requirement in mind :)
Thanks in advance! :P

With a room size of 10 x12 I would strongly recommend something on the lines of a quarter line or even bob brines ft2000 ( see link).

Transmission Line Speakers

Rohit,

Anilva made one and it sounds really good, there should be a thread on his build, maybe about a couple of years ago.

Thanks George,
Yes I read it in the other thread for single driver GB. The speakers of his seems to be based on 206 drivers and the enclosure is bigger in size.

Since in our case it is living room of smaller size 10x12 so space is at a premium :) The slimmer designs seem more suitable from size perspective.

I will try to dig that thread and see it. Thanks!

BTW what are your fav. horns that you have heard? Would like to hear more from you :)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
