Need help for DIY Screen - Pune

hi every body,
I'm new to this forum and i would like to share some of my ideas on DYI home theater screen. I live in hyderabad and built exclusive HT in my home. I bought blockout cloth from vijay textiles (exclusive show room for curtains). But i faced one problem with the width of the cloth. My screen size came to 100"X54" but i found only 48" width cloth. I have one question regarding the screen, what will be the effect on projected image if i join two cloths by sewing. Can any one answer my question

very much my problem....still to get a black out cloth though, (& even a projector is not yet finalised)...i want to have dimensions of 8feet X 5Feet for abouit 110" screen diagonally. In case I dont get a cloth of this dimension, I would like to ask if anybody has used seamed cloth as a screen & to what extent its acceptable?

Thanks & regards,
Saket

found great thread man.i am in the same boat.thinking what to do about diy screens.
i think stiching will be a problem as the stiched area will be little thicker.so it may be visible.
one thing i can say that 100 by 54 is good enough.yes its not 16 by 9.but greater than 2.35 by 1.perfect for movies.some 16:9 videos can be sacrificed at the cost of low cost diy screen.

Count me aboard as well.....almost confirmed on Spandex for a 138" diagonal 16:9 Acoustically Transparent screen.A kind member from AVS has agreed to ship the spandex from the US to my doorstep for a 65USB USPS International Priority Mail Service ( 5-7 days i suppose).

Will have to do the frame locally and just stretch and fix the spandex double layered.Hoping everything foes perfectly without any hitch.

Regards
Imrahn

Most Blackout cloth material comes 54 inches wide. Which means that for a 16:9 screen you will need 96 inches of material. Assuming you wrap an inch on either side of the frame-- leaves you with 52 inches height and the corresponding 92.44 inches width or a diagonal screen of 106 inches

Now for a 2.35:1 screen, using the same 54 inch blackout sheet, you will need 126.9 inches of material. Assuming you wrap an inch on either side of the frame-- leaves you with 52 inches height and the corresponding 122.2 inches width or a diagonal screen of 132.8 inches

So depending on which screen that you want-- make sure you make the frame to the correct 16:9 or 2.35:1 ratio-- ensuring that you have enough material to wrap around the frame or behind the frame

All the alternatives that I have tested are available in Pune. But you will have to test samples of them with your projector and satisfy yourself about the picture quality. Then go ahead with the purchase.

I will give you the contacts of people where you can purchase the materials. These are very specific people who had agreed to sell me the materials separately (which you won't get). PM me for details.

Hi ontherocks. I am opting DIY route and going to build 106" 16:9 Fixed frame screen. Today tried to get hands on Fabric. Its really hard to find one and really tough to compare with. Places where I found, store owners are unaware of any specifications such as gain of the material. please help me with getting right fabric for my project.
Unable to send you PM. Reason might be I am new to forum. Thanks in advance.

Hello Ontherocks,

Thanks a lot for reply!

Thats exactly what I'm looking forward to build! The rollover one. Even if it is not roll over, If I could just hang it on the wall, I would be more than happy.

I'm not too sure about the budget but at this point I would like to keep it as minimum as possible. Screen size around 100" would be appropriate I guess. Please let me know your views and any alternatives available.

Thanks.

Hi Rahim
I am also on the same boat and finding hard to source screen material.
I have also tried to contact Ontherocks but I guess he is unavailable right now and I am unable to send PM to him or you right now.

Can you please help me with DIY material? You can contact me on 9970050007 / [email protected].

Thanx

consider the laminate option also ,
there issues with clothed screen as waves may come over a time and the color tint may change . More over many cloth materials absorb good amount of light (unwanted) ... but the laminate gives a decent gain always .

procuring and stretching the cloth is very tricky and if you have little moisture the cloth will get the wave like shapes over a period of time .

yes the laminate is not acoustically transparent ..
I am enjoying a laminate DIY screen , it is maintenance free , just remove the dust it works great.
,
A laminate with grayish tint and matt finish is all you need , add few ply , favicol and border materials , you have the full shopping
list done .
The laminate is available in all the hardware stores , any experienced carpenter can make the laminate screen !

Hi Kaushik,
Laminated screen is on my wishlist over cloth screen. I searched market for laminates and it is only available 48" in height where for 100"+ screen it must be 54" at least for 16:9 aspect ratio.
Can you please suggest any specific laminate material and grade/shade for best results?
