New rack with pictures

Prem, the setup looks spartan and elegant. The rack goes very well with the wood finish of Lyritas. I still cannot get my head over these resonators. I am sure there is more to it than I understand.

With the high quality front end, and the amplification you have, it might be a good idea to try a vintage horn system. For your taste you could explore the Western Electric or the RCA based systems apart from Altecs.

Cheers.

Hi Anilva

Thanks. I have been exploring horn systems. Cannot get a fix on what drivers to use. Also am considering a strain gauge cartridge

a lot of my wood furniture have already been destroyed by termites
Why don't you call competent guys like PCI who will do a fabulous job in termite proofing your entire home? Trust me you will be happy you called them. Ideally, termite treatment is best done right before erecting the pillars and continuing from there; it can be done later on also. I did the treatment to an old flat that my mom has. It remained unoccupied for a long time and fell prey to the termites. After the treatment, they are all gone.
Its even more charming when you see it in person
I'm a big fan of old world looks; be it the house or the furniture. My sofa and dining tables were sourced from a retired Army Colonel who were moving abroad and I bought a matching centre table from a Calcutta based company who displayed the Victorian style furniture in a sale at Hyderabad when I was posted there; needless to say, they are all made of Rosewood.

Being thrown around all over the Country by my employer, building a house is not on my priority list right now but can't help day dreaming of building a house in Victorian and Neo Gothic architecture may be sometime in distant future.

Thanks for the tip. I must do it as soon as I can. I didn't have much say when the house (flat) was being built. It was done in a very 'usual' fashion. No one foresaw it will have to remain locked and unused/unattended for long durations. This house, like your mom's, has remained locked+unused for long durations. And now there are signs of termite rule everywhere  I don't even know where to start. Looks like I am in for a deep dent in my pocket :o

Hey Ranjeet it would not be as expensive as you think. The one I called was the regular pest control guy who was in the panel of State Bank of Hyderabad. I'm not sure if he would be willing to come all the way though. I don't have his details right now but can find out if you want.

The PCI guys have pan India presence and should be a better choice. Alternatively I can put you across to someone in the Banking circles of Delhi also if you want.

Regular fight with termites here... they attack the kitchen woodwork, but I don't think they have got their teeth into any free-standing furniture yet.

It had never occurred to me until I read the recent thread on fear to worry for the speaker cabinets

Nice clean approach, Prem (as always).

Any specific reason for choosing this specific variety? Is there any lighter (less dense) variety of wood that is available? And any methods to make them termite resistant?

I am also in the need of a new rack, but unable to decide. Wood is not my choice any longer due to maintenance reasons (a lot of my wood furniture have already been destroyed by termites).

hi,

A cooperative society called Rubco from Kerala makes premuim quality panels from rubberwood, they are available in various thicknesses and are pre treated for termites etc.

rubberwood is lighter in weight as compared to sheesham(indian rose wood), however i am not sure how rubberwood impact the sound quality.

best option is well treated Teak wood, with little bit of hard search you can get wider panels of teak wood at premuim price. Few weeks back a saw mill owner offered me teak wood pieces of width of abt 16 inches.

Today multiple solutions are available to make the wood termites proof like the ones recommended by Capt. Rajesh. Also there are chemicals available that can directly be used by the carpentars or the users. Only time will tell how successful they are. Termites may build resistance to these chemicals over next few years to come.

Prem,

Class apart my friend and way ahead of the curve. That is a sweet looking rack.
Noticed that you've taken the covers off the amp - how is the sound now?

This might mean another visit due to your place!!

Cheers!

Do come. It's very different from what you heard the last time. Way more open. Also a lot more bass

Isn't there only one thing that matters here: density?

But... which is best, more or less?

If one really wants freedom from vibration (with turntable it is certainly an issue, and with valves it might be too) then shouldn't we get more technical and talk isolation tables rather than wood? On top of the beautiful, sturdy, rack shelves, of course :)

If one really wants freedom from vibration ..
when we talk of Vibration we talk of 3 major types
1. From the ground which flows up to the components
2. From the Components which flows along the rack to other components
3. from the air (other sounds)

you can only isolate 1 while 2 and 3 have to be dissipated or Absorbed
each rack , due to the structural design and material works in different ways and in different frequency ranges . Also every material not jst takes away something in harmonics but adds its own flavour as well. so results can vary.

A very easy experiment is when you place a CD player or an Amp on an MDF board vis a vis on the floor !

Hi square_wave

Had no idea Acoustic Portrait made rosewood racks. When I googled I could not find any manufacturer. So I was actually having second doubts but went ahead

It was made popular by AP. It was also designed by AP. Since then many people have made them. It is seen in the gallery on their website ( the first pic). They do not sell them though.
