receiver is the hub of your entertainment system. It takes video and audio outputs from various sources like DVD player, bluray player, DTH box, Cd player, game console, etc. It decodes audio codecs like Dolby & DTS and outputs the sound in 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 channels.IT also outputs the video to the display. All speakers are fitted to the receiver. It also usually has an AM/fm tuner. All sources are connected by HDMI, optical, coaxial, or analogue cables. In your case, the PS3 has optical out and HDMI. I dont know if your Philips has digital or HDMI in. You can enjoy HD sound only if your Phillips has HDMI in. PS3 doesnt have 5.1 analogue out.
Examples of good cheap receivers are Yamaha 371/471, Denon 1312, You can also try complete HT systems like Onkyo 3400.
Hope this helps
